Cambelt on vRS FSi @ 40K Service?

Featured Replies

Need to get my vRS booked in for a 40K Service, which will be my first paid service having had the 3 year free servicing deal from new.

Anyway listed in the manual is "Inspect condition and tension of ribbed V-belt" with "Replace toothed belt (2.0-ltr. FSI Engines)" listed at 180,000KM (112K Miles). Now I have contacted two local dealers, the one that supplied the Car said it didn't need doing as my car a 57, 2010 Plate has a Chain and not a belt, where as another dealer is adamant it has a belt and needs inspecting and that it is as cheap to change the belt and water pump as an option as it is to inspect it. They are quoting £518 for the Cambelt & Water Pump change including VAT but will give me a 10% discount.

Now my questions are is it a belt or chain on the vRS FSI and does the Cambelt need to be changed at 40K or 112K and is it that difficult a job to inspect and hence changing it is the better option.

Yet to contact my local independent garage.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thx

Steve

TFSI has a belt not a chain and the interval is 4yr or lots of miles (not sure the mileage number but it's quite big))

£518 seems a bit high, I was quoted £455 for belt and pump and I thought that was steep. I know of a good independent so I'll get the belt done there and the servicing back at the dealer to keep the stamps.

VW have an offer on right now to do it for £399, they're advertising it for VWs but I believe some people have been able to take up the offer on their Skodas.

Its 60,000 miles or 4 years and is a cambelt. I would be inclined to go to an indepedant who knows what they are doing and who uses OE parts. The parts should only cost £179ish, thats for the cambelt kit, water pump aux belt and coolant needed but it is about 6 hours work to do everything. Or do what I did, changed it myself and saved a lot! :giggle:

Thanks guys, having a read of the other thread now. Good that my supplying dealer and the only dealer that has serviced it to date, checked and advised it was a chain and not a belt, but every other dealer who haven't seen it say belt.

Not going to be cheap, but it is looking like it will be an independent doing the work.

belt, pump & longlife service cost me 600 last month.

let me get this straight you say it is a 57 plate then say it is 2010? if yours is a TFSI then it is a belt, chain on a TSI

your supplying dealer is a numpty

I'm with this one - which is it?

Is the car on a 57 Plate or is it a 2010 model?

57 - cambelt - change required at 4yrs or 60k miles

2010 - camchain - no requirement to change.

I think its clear that the OP has a 57 plate, as he mentions a 3 year service deal which has now ended.

@OP - Just to confirm what has already been mentioned, you should look at changing the timing belt and water pump at 60,000 miles or 4 years which ever is sooner.

I had mine done in January, the car was just over 4 years old then but had only covered 53k, but better to be safe than sorry imho. Mine was done by an independent mechanic using OE parts, total cost under £300 which included fitting a new revision 'D' diverter valve (which I supplied) and realigning the headlights.

I can't believe the dealer - who sold the car in the first place - thinks it would have a chain!! :o

mine was 340 including full service( independent)

Thanks again guys, to confirm is a 57 Plate October 2007, just gone over 40K Miles but not quite 4 years old. Think I will get it done at an independents. Will contact a mate of my dads who has his own Garage.

£600 doesn't sound bad at all for all that.
