About to relace pads/discs... no pad retaining plate

Featured Replies

Im about to replace my pads, my new pagid pads dont come with a retaining plate :( , do i need to replace this and if so do i get it from skoda?

Or is it ok to use the old ones?

Cheers

The pad retaining plates are most likely anti-squeel shims they are made from stainless steel and don't often need to be replaced as long as you haven't mangled them. I think.

Thanks, i better be extra careful when i take the old pads out then!

Been told by Skoda Parts Dept anti-squeal shims and new bolts are supplied with their brake pads.

Outside suppliers tend to only supply the two new bolts and no anti-squeal shims.

I give my anti-squeal shims a good clean and smear copper-based grease on them, and look new when cleaned.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

My new EBC Green Stuff pads came fitted with anti-squeal shims as standard :p

Hello 'fabdavrav'

Did you get all three anti-squeal shims where one sits inside the caliper piston, or, just the two anti-squeal shims where brake pads do ride on.?

Thanks.

Three????? :S

Front pads have build in (glued on) anti-squeal shim/pad on the back of each pad!

Rears have the same.....but on the rears there is also a stainless steel clip strip which clips onto the caliper bracket for the pad lugs to slide on (two per caliper...from Skoda....I just clean and reuse mine) B)

Hello 'fabdavrav'

'What I mean't was' some front pads have a glued-on padded back attached to them.

The pads as you know, sit in a top and bottom stainless steel shim/ guide, and a stainless steel 3 pronged guide/shim sits in the caliper piston.

It's these guides/ shims are what I'm calling anti-squeal shims, and liberally apply some copper-based grease.

The rear has only the top and bottom stainless steel guide/ shim, with no caliper guide/ shim.

I found the 'Mintex' brake pads are missing the glued-on padded back, whereas the 'Ferodo' brake pads have them.

Apologise for any misleading information.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

The rears we agree on..... The fronts....you must different calipers C54-II ??? I have FSIII and on these there is a 3prong metal locating clip fixed on the back of the pads, this goes into the piston to clip the pad to the piston...or it clips to the caliper frame. There are no additional stainless steel clips or shims...the pad "horns" rest directly on the fixed slider part of the caliper frame which is part of the cast hub carrier frame. B)

Yes, thats a nuisance, Mintex are the UK arm of TMD Friction that also own Pagid and Textar, VAG tend to use Pagid for brake brake applications at factory and Textar for rear. One other issue I had with Mintex was that some of the bolts were missing and they were not the revised ones that have been used since 1998 or so - and the general fit and finish of the pads was crap which did not inspire me at all - so they got chopped back into ECP against something that was what it was meant to be.

Brake Caliper original 'LUCAS' type and can't say if the 'LUCAS' is a C54-11 and agree with a 3 pronged attachment being present.

Do I understand you have no stainless steel shims/ guides that sit on the caliper housing / frame /

part of the cast hub carrier in which the brake pad lugs sit top and bottom.?

My Fabia VRS is a 2005 model, and might be totally different to your model year/ car concerning the brake calipers.?

Mines a 2001year Elegance...so has slightly smaller discs......and yes, I don't have these "shims"....my calipers are widely used on VAG cars of it's age...so have the same thing. Like I say yours must be the other type....Also usually when people refer to "anti-squeal shims" I take it as meaning the "anti-squeal" backing on the pad, as sometimes these are seperate (as in some race cars) see below.
