1.8 petrol conversion to LPG

Featured Replies

Well that was a good start.Apologise, I typed in the wrong details.Should have been the 1.8 TSI 160PS 4x4 petrol.

I'm travel every week down the M1 and also tow a small Eriba caravan for the hols.So it would be ideal if I could cut the running costs as I have access to LPG at both ends of the journey at below the usual pump prices. So would appreciate any input regards converting this car.Cheers

Don't know of anybody who has done the conversion, but in everything i've read about such conversions (I've thought about it for my V8 powered MGB) there are two major isues;

1. Is it worth the money? You have to factor in the saving on fuel costs against the costs of conversion. In my case, since my MGB covers less than 2000 miles a year, I decided 'no' ... you have to do quite a high mileage before you'll break even.

2. Where are you going to put the gas tank? In the MGB it's possible to fit a donut shaped one where the spare wheel would go. Since the Yeti, by default, does not carry a spare, presumably you could find a tank to fit in that space - but you would of course lose bootspace.

Also if you want to go abroad, you wouldn't be able to go on Eurotunnel AFAIK if you were to have the LPG conversion fitted.

Can they convert Carbs engine to LPG? Anyway, how about where the batteries are, then move the battery to on top of the rear parcel shelf (need single battery conversion tough!)

Yes, the V8 engine (from a Rover SD1 - and actually with a Holley carb) on the MGB can be converted (though I'm conscious we're hijacking this thread, which is about the possibility of converting a Yeti). The location of the tank was not a problem - spare wheel space would be fine. It simply isn't worth the money I'd have to spend to have the job done, given the kinds of mileage I do in the car

I can't really see it being a worthwhile investment on any modern four cylinder engine. Unless you were looking to keep the car for 80,000 miles?

Thanks for your comments. On average I travel about 15000mls each year and have no intention of using the tunnel.Prices vary from what Ive read on line between £900 and £1500.Tomorrow I'm going to ring around and get some definite quotes.I'll let you know the prices later.Cheers

Oh right, sounds good! It might also weigh up the car, which you don't want!

Perhaps it might be worthwhile having a look a over here

The Prins system from my research seems to be the best on the market at the mo, but costs more!

On your mileage per year you would roughly save a bag of sand

One has to wonder why you did not just select a Diesel engined Yeti instead of the 1.8 petrol? All the performance numbers for the 170 CR beat the petrol, including 20% lower consumption. With an LPG conversion, you will lose quite a bit of performance as well?

:giggle::thumbup: +1 ... love my CR170 too. Just a shame it won't run on chipfat

I'll bite my tongue on the performance figures statement... ;):giggle:

Performance lose whilst running on the gas should be negligible but it does seem weird you posted about it on the 1.6 Greenline then posted about the 1.8 petrol. I know a number of friends who have had conversions (on a Jeep Wrangler, a Range Rover and a Grand Cherokee) and you really are looking more like £2,500 for a decent system. That lpg forum that was linked to was recommended by an LPG vehicle owning friend too btw.

Well, on paper...........for a standard (non Betty) 1.8tsi....emoticon-0140-rofl.gifemoticon-0140-rofl.gifemoticon-0140-rofl.gif
