i put some jbl speakers in the front doors, got them from halfords for half price and they sound amazing. i put vibes 6x9's in the rear shelf and did away with the std speakers.

make sure you dissconnect the front and rear tweeters as they sound rubbish and really harsh, they are wired from the speakers. Even just dissconecting the tweeters makes a little improvement.

I got rear JBL's and some aftermarket head unit and the sound is horrid. Sounds like its just coming from one side of the car ( i have checked and this isnt the case ) I think its because my seat if pushed back close to the rear tweeter. Uch its so bad I dont use the radio anymore. Might try disconnecting the rear tweeters. Why is the sound so pants ? What are the OEM speakers rated at? ps JBL's arnt producing any bass , is this cause the tweeters are sapping the power from them?

Did you get the component speakers as the car currently has with separate woofer & crossover?

Keep things simple. Bin all the standard speakers. (i have an 02 plate L&K) The standard ones are very poor and not worth using. A pair of shallowish mount 6 and halfs down front. They wont give that much bass or depth as they are likely to be designed to work in conjunction with a subwoofer. If you are really fussy replace the rears as well, the estate like mine uses 6 by 4's. And to get real bass and depth you need a subwoofer. Easiest thing to is buy an active sub. You get a sub and amp all in one, it may even come with all the required cables. Ive done all my speakers and headunit and binned the horrible tweeters, the sound is very good but really missing the sub, which i will be fitting over next week or so. Go to ebay and check out the MTX road thunder 8 or 12 inch, 99 and 149 quid. Im fitting the 12, both are a bargain. The best subs ive ever heard are MTX, tried many makes but none touch MTX.

Which speakers did you use up front? Did you use the existing wiring & plug & play?

Im using infinity reference shallow mount up front connected with QED micro cable. To be honnest any speaker 40 quid upwards is going to sound good. Its the sub that you need to really lift the sound. I used to build my own boxes, fit amps etc but kit is so cheap and effective now, you would be as well just buying the active sub. I rewire my speakers also so i know for definate they are not phasing. Headunit, 4 speakers, wiring, and sub/amp came to 380 quid. Same sound 15 years ago......1200 - 1500 quid!

Well, if youre ever up here, Ive a job for you!

Whatever speaker you'll use, remove the film from the door, otherwise they all will sound rubbish,no bass

That film shoud not allow the water came into the car,but don't worry it won't.

I have Magnat speakers ,I listened them before buing,in the shop they sound very good, but in my car they sound absolute rubbish until I remove the door film.I also have a decent Pioneer Head unit.

cheers i disconnect them strait away , so the jbl u fitted in the front doors went strait in?

yes they went straight in, if i remember right i had to cut the plug off and put new connectors on the wires.

just pop the grill off the door card, there is no need to take the door card off.

I got jl audio c5 front and back, the bass and the bass response you can get is amazing, although they are running from amp :smirk:

The other speakers are some pioneers, they are from their custom range, i will try and hunt the part number later :giggle: at the mo i know they are a darking shiny blue and some ridges on them lol but had them in my astravan and from just a alpine head unit they sounded very good with plenty of bass, at a fraction of the jl price

Just been looking at those JBL Components. Did they fit straight in, or did you have to modify the door because they were too deep?

sorry to jump in on this thread but it is discussing a problem i have, can anyone advise on speaker size and type i.e via a link that will fit under the rear speaker grills ( either side of parcel shelf ) on a mk1 octy hatch as mine was supplied new with no rear speakers

i understand i will have to run new wiring to them

thanks

They are 5.25" or 13cm.

Depth isn't an issue either, so you can get some quite good ones in there. There is also suppossed to be tweeters in the rear doors, but a lot of people disconnect them anyway.

Thankyou rk696
