Problem with new Yeti - any ideas?

Featured Replies

Had my new 1.2 Yeti for just over a week and have done 900 miles including a long journey with no problem.

Suddenly yesterday, after reversing out of the drive (as I've done many times before), when I put her into gear and started off there was a low metallic buzzing from somewhere under the car. This seemed to happen on cornering right or left and wasn't related to changing gear. It also happened when I took my feet off all the pedals and allowed her to travel at her own power straight down a hill.

This went on for a couple of miles intermittently and then stopped and no more problems for the rest of the 17 mile journey. Returning home was fine, no noise whatsoever.

Again this morning, had the problem but it was worse and went on for longer but again after about five miles it stopped and was OK for the rest of the journey. Again, coming home tonight I haven't had any problem.

She's booked into the dealer for Friday afternoon but I've explained that they may not hear this buzzing sound as it seems to disappear when the engine is warm or when the car hasn't been standing outside overnight.

No warning lights came on and the drive seemed as good as usual.

Anyone got any ideas what this might be?

Thanks

Sounds like a stone in the disc, quite common and nothing to worry about.. :)

Thanks Looby. I don't have any technical knowledge, why would this only happen when the engine was cold? Do you mean the brake disc and is it likely to shake itself free?

Hi LizC,

my wife's Fabia 1.2TSI has a similar thing, although I would not say a metallic noise as such but likewise only happens at idle and usual (but not always) when cold, oh yes intermittant too  Also going to have to get it booked in, or hope I can get to a dealer when it's having a turn.

However I do remember reading sometime back about some chattering loose pipework in the engine bay causing similar issues :wonder:

Anyway hopefully they will be able to trace it on Friday,

TP

Yes it will free itself but can take some time. It seems to happen when you reverse it flicks the stone into the disc area. Sometimes if you stop and reverse again it will free it. I do hope it's this and nothing worse..

Wife's old Fabia did this a few times and each time caused initial heart failure - it can be quite noisy. We have a gravel driveway. Once it did it when I pulled into a garage to refuel. I smiled at the chap next to me filling his TVR when he made a joke about the new Skoda Skip. But then I almost fell on the floor when his pride and joy had 'overfuelled' and then refused to start. I gladly helped push his car into a parking space before speeding off in the wife's 'Skip'. :giggle:

Strangely never suffered the same with Yeti, Roomster or 2x Octavias although my dad's Micra has done it once after sitting on our drive.

I think you notice it from cold because that would be after the tyres have had time to stick to any pieces of gravel and then flick them into the disc when you move off.

Pleased to report the problem seems to be resolved.

I reversed out of my drive this morning, went forward a few yards and then put it into reverse for a few yards. Not had any buzzing noise since. Haven't yet cancelled the garage on Friday, will see how it goes tomorrow to make sure it really is OK.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
