45k and............

Featured Replies

Broken!!

Driving my 2.0PD home last night got to 3k on the revs in 3rd and it was like I'd just slapped the brakes on!

In short the turbo has seized up most annoyed as it's only got 45k on clock, has it's oil checked every week and service is all up to date!

I'm not a happy bunny!

Sorry rant over now.

Holy crap thats unlucky, hope they sort it quickly. 45K is an insanely short time for a major part to fail.

Unfortunately seems to be the achilles heel of the BKD engine this

Were there any symptoms, noises etc before it happened ?

No noise, just seemed reluctant at times on the power.

The best of it is seconds before it happened it was on turbo like a beast as I was playing with a Merc, then......... bye bye turbo!

I drive like grandad 95% of the time as I run it for work and get 700 miles a tank but once a week I open it up, go through the rev range and gears but last night it didn't want to!

That's pretty much how I drive mine. It currently has 42k on it, I hope I haven't got this to look forward to in 3k miles :(

Is this just the 140BHP engine or is the 170BHP Vrs TDi PD engine affected also ??

Mine is the 140.

I notice you have a FL model. Would your engine not be a CR and under warranty?

  • Author

It's not a CR is a 09 plate PD it is under warranty but I'm still annoyed about it!

BIG Nick

do you let it heat up properly before hard acceleration? not blaming you, just trying to figure out why its failed, btw can recommend Mark from CR turbos for replacement or Hybrid option if you want to go that way B)

Oh yes it never gets a good thrashing until the needle reaches the middle which I believe is around 90c.

As already mentioned I only let it rip once a week and it tends to be on the back end of a journey!

I have the BKD PD 140 and am just reading now about these potential turbo issues. Is there anything you can do to lessen the chances of this happening? Are there any signs to look out for of an imminent failure? I do drive off boost while the car is cold and also for a mile or two before switching the engine off at the end of a journey.

The car also has a good service history of regular oil changes so I am hoping I can fend off any potential failures for a while yet.

Does anyone recall the advice about letting the engine idle for a short while before shutting down ? Especially if you have " not been hanging about " ? Just a thought could be a factor if it's een getting it on the way home

are you sure it's not the turbo going into limp mode as it just could be the boost valve rather than the turbo itself?

Been diagnosed at dealer as turbo seized they rang me today saying the parts have been ordered

Mine went 99K miles and was still on the original turbo when I sold it. (2005 2.0PD140 estate)

Was yours on fixed or variable servicing? Just curious as to why some of these turbos fail at low mileages and some seem to go on forever!

Variable, it had 4 services in that time.

These turbos are a real weak point on VAG diesels. Here is my list of doom:

Audi A3 2.0 TDI 140. 70k miles turbo dead.

Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI 110. 50k miles turbo dead.

Dads VW Golf 2.0 TDI 140. 55k miles turbo dead.

Best mates Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI 110. 80k miles turbo dead.

Our 55 plate PD140 had the same thing - absolutely no warning (it had logged an overboost error a couple of weeks before, but you'd not notice that without doing a random scan - this was revealed because of fun with the electric windows), just went into limp mode on the motorway.

It's not a CR is a 09 plate PD it is under warranty but I'm still annoyed about it!

Well, it's good news for you! When ours went, we had to wait the best part of a week for someone from Skoda to inspect it and OK it under their Approved Used warranty. To be honest, if they hadn't, it'd have been a claim against the dealer (59k miles - not sufficiently durable).

Dunno - the manual (well, for my Fabia at least) says to let it warm up and cool down..?

Ours was serviced according to the variable servicing schedule ...

Not sure what the Octavia manual says, but the Fabia one says to let it cool down.

UPDATE:

Turbo didn't fall apart so no swarf has gone into the engine (hopefully)

Now just waiting for the new turbo to arrive!

BIG Nick :)

If you go on parkers and chechout the Renault posts they are having massive turbo probe this it is widely accepted is down to the insane extended service intervals used to entice fleet buyers I'm gonna rock the boat here but anyone hwaiting till umpteen thousand miles before oil changes is asking for trouble especially if you are driving it hard,
