Engine Mounts (dog bone)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I think its time to sort out the excess play in my engine mounts. I was going to do the 'dog bone' first, I have searched and there seems to be mixed opinions on poly bushing it, mainly vibration complaints.

Now, how much more vibration will i get with the poly bushes? Is it worth me just replacing with OE stuff? Someone even mentioned fitting a few sheets of kitchen lino imbetween standard bushes to stiffen things up?

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone that has fitted the poly bushes etc!!

Many thanks all :)

I've got the superpro bush's in mine, all 3 dogbone bush's and when first fitted there really harsh but as said above they do settle down but you can tell there not standard bush's, there abit annoying when sat in traffic but boy do they tighten things up at front and make car feel alot more responsive

I've got powerflex ones in, properly torqued up and everything.

I did get quite bad vibrations at first, but as said, it dies down. Only time I notice it now is on startup and pulling away when the revs drop a bit.

I have just changed the dogbone with a normal one aftermarket made by Vaico (Germany)

Useless....no difference at all....the engine swings the same when I'am changing gears at high revs.

Was it actually an uprated one, or just a stock one?

stock

That would be why then. They are really soft, even when new. I personnaly think they're too soft for the 1.8t engine - They have the same part fitted to 1.4 golfs etc. :dull:

Most people would go for the polyurethane ones like Superpro of powerflex etc.

I have a bedded in power flex set if anyone interested. removed when i removed all bushes and replaced with Super Pro.

I have a power flex one and it is certainly much more vibey than stock, it settled down massively compared to what it was like new though.

Any reason you went for super pro instead of powerflex? Are they just cheaper?

IMO there's no real quality difference between SuperPro or PowerFlex. Both are excellent quality.

In terms of dogbones, there's also the complete replacement dogbone that comes in THS's FR3 engine mount kit. THS now sell the dogbone on its own

Seems to do the job, but not been on long enough to judge longer-term quality.

I have Vibratechnics mounts and a Powerflex dog bone. The only time I really notice vibration is at a standstill when the steering wheel shakes. Does not really bother me...

I went to the powerflex diesel specific dogbone bush(420R), big increase in vibration at idle, and looooww revs. Only driven few hundred km's though... DIY downpipe stopped rattling to heatshield so it does it's job(or i just cant hear it due vibration noise in cabin:)

None if you use the correct, 70 shore, bush. Those using 'petrol' or 'race' 80 or 90 shore will get vibration and no it won't completley go over time, it's less evident on petrols and DMF equipped cars however.

It also depends on the shore of the small end bush or if you leave that voided.

The smooth way to go which is just a taught in terms of engine mount control, but doesn't give a harsh idle, is a 70 shore 'diesel' big engine and a void fill insert small end on the stock voided bush. A replacement poly small end looks nicer and is easier to fit but is slightly harsher on idle, perfectly livable with unless you are fussy.

Another vote for super pro here. Vibration wasnt too bad even from new.

Many thanks for the replies all :) Where is the best place to get the '70' bush's then, I take it that part is just specified for diesels?

Only removed the powerflex bush as I was replacing everything under the car as i was swapping VRS stuff for Audi TT rack, R32 Hubs & ARB, LCR top mounts, TT wishbones and replaced all bushes with Super pro. The dogmount is not really differnt to the powerflex though. Price wise they are around the same. I also installed the front dogbone bush into the void as this really tightens up the car. Yes you get vibration that really settles down after a few miles, some vibration still remains but is liveable and far better than the sloppy std bush.

How much you want for the bushes?
