Reviving an old Fabia Estate

Featured Replies

Just bought a 2001 Y reg Fabia 1.4 8v Classic petrol estate with unknown service history and several problems which I intend getting sorted before use. The car needs MOT so no doubt other problems will arise but the most immediate concerns are; tyres, service history and cambelt.

The tyres are mismatched in terms of brand and the spare is down to the belting. The fitted tyres are 165 60 14s but I'm not sure that they are right. Can someone confirm what the correct size for this model.

I've no service history or documentation. Is it possible to obtain a print out of service history from any Skoda dealer (assuming it has been serviced at a dealership).

When should cambelts be changed on this model?

Many thanks for your help and advice.

I think you need to go to the dealer it has been serviced at. However, most work carried out now is put on a national database so any skoda dealer can see it. Doesn't apply to old work though.

1.4 8v = cam chain. No need to change unless rattly or broken really.

Dealer should be able to tell you if it's been serviced there - although it sounds pretty neglected, so not sure how much will be there.

The timing chain does have a habit of getting rattly mind you, and it's not too difficult to do, and the parts cost buttons...

Depending on the width of the wheels the tyre size would be either 165/70/14 or 185/60/14

Will the wheels be stamped somewhere with the width?

Good to know about the timing chain. The supplying dealer is now no longer in business so I guess, given the cars age, service schedule will not have been kept to.

Hopefully with some TLC the car will give lots more service. Thanks for all the replies and advice so far.

Should say inside the rim somewhere. Will be imbossed with '6', 6j' or something. The 6 referring to the number of inches.

I think service history should be kept centrally so any dealer should be able to tell you.

With those tyres fitted and the fact that it's a classic the wheels are probably 5.5J. A decent upgrade is to pick up polo/ibiza/fabia spare wheels and tyres part no 600 601 027 A or C from scrappies. These wheels have 185/60-14 tyres and you can often pick up brand new wheels and tyres for £40/50. Hi, I should be able to give you info later on tonight as I,ve got the the original Skoda brouchers etc, Haynes et etc.... You can have a different make or model of tyre on the front axle to the back axle, but not on the same axle!!!185/60, 14" was the widest tyre on a 14" rim that Skoda fitted, and a common tyre....but needs the steel rim to be 6" wide tho'. Any dealership (Skoda) should be able to give you a list of work done to it from the Skoda database...but if it has been done outside the network then nothing I'm afraid .....get back to you later.. The 14'' steels only came in 5j or 6j, the classic will have the 5j fitted

Quite correct, couldn't remember as I sold the wheels and tyres off my classic after I got a set of 6Js from from a man fitting alloys on his comfort.

Just double checked info......Classic came with 165/70 R14" tyres on a 5" x 14" steel rim. Skoda also did a 1.2lt Sport version in the UK which had 195/50 R15" tyres on a 15" alloy rim!!

Also the 1.2lt engine has a timing chain as a SOHC engine...but the chain and tensioner need changing after a high mileage (don't know specifics). B)
