steering/suspension creaking

Featured Replies

I have one of those annoying noises that I can't track down.

Its a kind of creaking noise that occurs at low speed when steering and when going over small bumps in the road.

If I saw the steering quickly back and forth it is most noticeable. It sounds like it is coming from somewhere within the steering column behind the dashboard.

I have little/no mechanical knowledge so if it is something like a suspension bush is there any way I can check by actually looking at it and seeing if it is worn?

Hopefully it is nothing major that is going to cost loads I can't cope with any more big bills!!

Could be either of the main culprits....Front wishbone rear bush (console bush), or ARB bush......Park car, open bonnet and press down firmly to bounce car, do this in centre on car then at either side of engine bay....if it sounds worse on one side then deffo' ARB bush that side....get under car and look from rear of front wheel at driveshaft, look for a saddle clamp holding rubber bush around a bar..that bush is the ARB bush....spray some wd40 on it then bounce car again...should stop now!!! Then get ARB bush replaced. Easy job to do yourself.. I could of course be wrong and it's the rack....but start of with the easiest to eliminate!!! B)

Ok, Tried bouncing the car at the front but there is no noise at all when the car is stationary. Not even from the steering being turned.

The sound only comes when the car is moving and having used the WD40 on the bushes it makes no difference. The noise seems to be coming from inside the car behind the dashboard but to the right hand side and below the clocks?

Any other ideas???

Ahhhhhh....a variation on the "mouse in dashboard"......if below the clocks...then most likely the bit of black plastic in front of them.....just slide it towards the steering wheel to remove.... B)

yeah the bit of plastic trim under the clocks always creaks in mine just gotta pull it out abit lol

Must be a mouse! Its not the clocks though having said that someone has had the clocks out and messed with them. Its more inside the dashboard, I even thought it could be the windscreen wiper mechanisms. Going to have to take some bits apart and investigate. In a way i don't mind if its just trim rubbing as long as its not a major component giving way. Only had the car 4 weeks and have already had issues with the traction control not working. Think I may have bought a lemon but am determined to rectify the faults.

There are lots of threads covering the "mouse" in the centre of the dash just above the central heater vents etc.....just normal I'm afraid.. B)

The wifes 2006 Fabia vRS developed a creaking noise from behind the drivers side of the dash board.

After many weeks and lots of failed attempts to try and trace/fix it...it turned out that the creaking noise was coming from one of the two plastic bonnet mountings on the underside of the bonnet near the hinges.

I took them both off and the problem has never re-occured.

I've just noticed a creak/rattle that sounds very similar to the OP's original description.

Does it under medium/hard steering, both directions. Does it most when you pull it hard in one direction or see saw it. If you put it in full lock and do a circle there is no noise.

Sound seems to come from steering column.

Did any of you guys managed to sort this issue out (Sam745 and Coiner)?

Think I may have the same issue with mine grrr

have pretty much the same issue myself. its fairly annoying. i have replaced the rear wishbone bushings and my mechanic looked over it twice and cant see anything. it also passed the test just before it happened

Sorted mine this evening. There's two small rubber blocks under the bonnet by the hinges. Remove them and give it a try!

Worked for me :)

Same here. I was full sure it was top mounts after examining everything else. I tried the two rubbers and the noise is gone.

This is them

I'd like to hear from the guys who were having these problems last year, mine has just started today the creak noise as described in the thread. It occurs when see sawing the steering or turning sharpishly. I noticed thehe noise over music, going round a tight roundabout on a harsh surface.

The car had a new steering rack or column last year when I bought it.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but earlier today I moved over in the road for a police car to get through the traffic and at about 3 to 5mph hit the curb on medium lock as I saw infront a low curb and didn't see the full height curb which made abit of a cringey bang, as a pot hole does that you wish you'd seen in time.

The car has a month and a half left of it's used skoda warranty that it came with.

Please, HELP!
