drivers outer door handle difficult to open

Featured Replies

my superbs driver side outer door handle is difficult to open,

you generally have to open / pull the handle two or three times to get in .

there is resistance on pulling but it feels as if it isnt pulling far enough to release the latch

its the same with the door open and you stick a screwdriver in the closed latch, pull the handle it doesnt want to open, two or three pulls and it opens, bloody inconvenient and i look like a car thief trying to get in !

there is no problem with the inner door handle thats normal and perfectly smooth

any ideas??

yeah there's adjustment on the cable from the handle to the catch bit of a pain to adjust but it can be done small screw driver and a pair of long nose pliers

I had one cable come out of the handle on my passat, it was a common fault, if you google it there are how too's for the passat. The easiest way to do it was to take the lock blank out on the passenger door as it was just a case of removing a torx screw in the door which was under a cover on the inner door next to the lock mechanism when the door is open. I dont know if its the same to remove the lock but I would imagine so.

hope this helps

hi there, can you give me more info on this , will i need to remove the steel bolt on cover inside the door that everything seems to be bolted to??

is there a fault with the outer handles, some thing about a pin not being in correctly, causing this type of problem?

Nothing needs to be removed inside to do this. The cables are visible from outside, if you hold the handle open and look at it from the direction of the lock you will see a ribbed channel which the cable sits in. It just pops out of there and moving it up one or two points will adjust, think its one of those to take easy when moving it to get it perfect rather than a big adjustment at once.

cheers for that buddy,

i'll be doing this tomorrow,

i looked at a couple of sites with passat problems and its all become a bit clearer !,

i always think worst case scenario but looks like a quick fix,

would you have an idea why the rear outer handle doesnt go back home all the way unless pushed in? it sits proud a little bit, but doesnt affect the opening or closing?

thanks again

dont know about it not closing, might be worth checking the same thing for the cable though in case its not set right and the cable doesnt return fully and holds it out! I would just check both sides on the back to see if they are in the same spot!!

Hi all

I have the same problem. Tom thanks for the advice I have a question. I can see the ribbed channel but how do I get hold of the cable to move it up a couple of notches. mine is quite far down and I can not get hold of it. Does the lock surround come off enabling better access?

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Maybe there's nothing wrong with your door handle and you're user name is a facade? :giggle: :sun:
