3rd gear - no overtaking power

Featured Replies

Was pushing the car a little more today (had it just over a week) and thought I'll stick it in third and see what happens. At about 2600rpm foot on the floor nothing happened really. So i thought maybe i just caught it off guard so this time I was doing about 45mph in 4th , dropped it down to third and planted it. Nothing again just a very conservative slow steady increase in speed with no sense of urgency. It did feel like it wasnt going to stop picking up speed but naturally I gave up at the national speed limit. This has left me thinking that 3rd is no good for overtaking. I have no confidence in it at all as I couldn't feel any sense of acceleration no real feel of enough torque to over take an arctic for example. Is this normal pushed back in seat 1st 2nd , out of puff for 3rd, 4th and 5th for cruising?

Running 57i and recirc

Cheers,

Paul

Doesn't sound right to me I have a MK1 and it overtakes and pulls well in 3rd and 4th. If doing 50mph or more I would normally just drop it to 4th and it picks up plenty quick enough. Sounds like you have a problem I'm afraid.

Yeah, something deffo not right there. Tell us some more about the car, mileage, age, any engine management lights, condition etc...

2002, 45k on the clock , no engine management lights on, fsh, good condition. I was thinking of reverting it back to stock as it came with the original bits. I put in 97 ron esso stuff last week up from 95 ron shell stuff the week before. Its going in for a major skoda service in a couple of weeks (cha ching) so maybe that will sort it. Ideally i dont want to revert back to stock but I can't see another way round it. It does say to use 98ron in the skoda book but at 145p at the pumps I was going to leave it untill the price comes down a bit. Could it be as simple as petrol?

oh it does display service on the LCD

Just emailed Forge too to see if the recirc could be at fault. Wish I had a boost gauge...

Deffo not right. I find 2nd and 3rd quite fun!

I'm thinking revert to stock , probably the best answer. Then add one mod , try it out then add the other to rule them out.

Why not, its a start...as the DV is easy to change.

Sounds like you have no boost for some reason and the car is in limp-mode. Do you hear any weird sounds when flooring in (e.g. like air wooshing out)? I'd first do a vag-com scan for fault codes.

Usually the engine management light comes on in limp mode and there is some fault code to be found, but not always (when I had the exact same problem, i had no light AND no code). But do check first and let us know...

Sounds like you have no boost, might be worth getting it scanned for fault codes as a 1st step.

Sounds like limp mode, you probably have a 17705 error code waiting for you.

3rd gear is normally the fun gear, depending on the driving! You should be able to hit 100mph in 3rd....

I thought limp mode was no power at all - no boost. Im definitely getting boost as you can here it dumping.

Strangely it was ok today. But then wasn't but then was again. And then it went like a missile in second but i was in a thirty so i didnt hold it for long. Headache..

jmf - yer I here lots of wooshing noises but i thought that was just because of the mods. Sometimes i think i can here it dumping when im accelerating but im not 100% only does it on very light throttle so it could be the dv opening just slightly?

Also, it runs like a big sack of cack first thing until after about a minute. I believe its something to do with secondary air pump but no idea why it runs so rough.

arrrrgh , so strange to have power then flat. I was thinking it pulls better on light throttle, i was doing this all the way home from work then third gear got flat again. There was a moment where 3rd and 4th felt pretty good but i didnt dare floor it.

Speed Junkie - 100mph feels very dooable its just there no urgency to get there it just calmly increases in speed.

Starting to lean toward the recirc and limp mode thing now. Been browsing the forums :)

Had same thing. Scan it first, then we see :)

You know, mine behaved like this when the coil pack was duff. Id recommend contacting your local dealer regarding the coil pack recall and see whether you can get a free set sorted out.

Hope this helps you mate, I had the same thing, but first of all I would try giving it some more 'beans' and then see what you think, I.e slam it in 2nd doing 35mph then up to third....

My Octy had an air leak which meant I had an awful turbo surge and sometimes hardly any boost, tried loads of things until eventually putting it into a garage and it was a £70 fix...!

You could try MAF sensor, could be dirty throttle body, even ****ty coil packs.

But first of all, get the oil nice and warm and take it out for the thrashing of a lifetime.... Might clear the cobwebs out ;)

Where in Wales are you ??

north wales.

Was being generous with the pedal again today but still mixed responses. More often it has a flat feel than anything else.

new n75 might be the ticket. I'm right in thinking this controls boost pressure?

As I said...

The n75 is a boost solenoid, yes, it controls the actuator on the turbo.

breather hoses , n75 , coilpacks, air filter, recirc .... i've had the car less than two weeks and im already seeing £££ signs :D

Coilpacks are free dude. Get them sorted. Where in N Wales are you?

Get it read for error codes!

Don't just replace the N75 for the sake of it, as they are not prone to failure. Although everyone seems to randomly replace them for no good reason, just because they are easy to change. If the N75 is faulty, there will be an error code stored for it.

As said, it sounds like the car is dropping into limp mode. Which reduces the peak boost from 10psi to 5psi. When in limp, if you key off and then on again, it will normally reset and switch back to 10psi for a period.

The common culprit is the 17705 error code, which is usually caused by a leaking breather hose, or dirty throttle body.

It doesn't sound like the coilpacks, but if it was they would also throw up a code. As Liverpool-Lad has said, you can get a free set from the dealers on a current recall anyway, so you may as well (bear in mind the dealer will not replace non-genuine coilpacks).

Get yourself sorted out with a handheld code reader, or software/cable for a laptop, and save yourself loads of money!

Have you checked the rubber pipe from your lower intercooler (pancake) pipe to the turbo? It has two retaining clips to hold it and a silver heat shielding jacket over it. If one of the clips has dislodged (as mine did once) you'll get sporadic boost loss, and a louder than normally wooshing more noticible through the drivers air vent. Doesn't cost anything to check either

Cheers guys I will be getting the coilpacks replaced when i call the dealer tmo. Going to have a rummage under the hood on the weekend for dodgey pipes. Went for a drive tonight and now and then it pulled like a train. Cant wait to get it sorted cause it feels like a bit of an animal when working :)
