Cheap aftermarket boost pipes?

Featured Replies

The pipe from the top of the inter cooler keeps popping off. I changed the pipe as the lugs had worn off but it happened again, so I was wondering if anyone knew of a reasonably priced after-market solution that could replace the top 3 pipes?

Cheers.

New pipe and clips and cable ties across the joint, it will never fail again. Each joint gets four cable ties. One round the boost pipe, one round the fixed joint, and another two linking those together.

Did you change the locating spring clips as well? these also wear and break easily they are only about a quid per clip to replace.

Did that but with 5 cable ties connecting. Snapped em all. :(

No. I'll try that. thanks.

Cable ties are trash

I shudder at the thought of drilling 4 holes in the IC then fitting self tappers - I assume there is not enough pressure in the system to suck the swarf back to the turbo? :o

yeah sounds like a boost leak just waiting to happen

If you use large width all weather cable ties, they will never break. Boost pressure is about 28PSI and cable tie shear strength 600 Lbs.

Omg what a bunch of morons!!

Take the smic off for gods sake! And there self tappers i.e do not need drilled!!

And as for leaking boost i dont think so i ran 173bhp with it done like this

My cost to fix = pennys

Just carry on with you £90 boost hoses here and there lol... Now who looks stupid

pops off at the other end - not the end connected to the intercooler.

So you don't drill a pilot hole for the self tapper to start?

I suppose just ramming a self tapper into a piece of alloy is certainly another way of doing it? :o

All depends what kind of tools you have

Mickey mouse / learning centre tools wont do the job...

Pretty sure the collar of intercooler is plastic and boost pipe collar is aluminium!

So its hardly hard going!

Im a qualified sparky so i know how a screw and screwdriver work... Use them every day believe it or not

And as for leaking boost i dont think so i ran 173bhp with it done like this

I personally think this method will cause a leak.

So that's where I've been going wrong. I was wondering why JCB tool sets were going so cheap..

Well you personally thinking is all suspicion isnt it....!

Have you done it? If the answer is no you have no idea don't you....

I rr'd the car on a stage 1 map and it made 173bhp... Might have made 200bhp plus like if i hadnt of self tapped it! Lol

Ive mucked about with soo many boost pipes its unbelievable! Put a custom one on my golf tdi, mucked around with my seat sport fmic on my hybrid fabia, had an smic on my first fabia....

If you guys are trying to make me look a retard its not going to wash...

It will not leak if your super anal you could put some sealant of the self tapper if you so wish.... But no need

On a serious note, I've seen some metal cable ties before. Dunno if that's the weather ones which was mentioned earlier.

Re to the tapping screw. I don't see what's the problem, its sucking into the pipe, if worse comes to worse it will screw in more and create a tighter seal.

The cable tie game is pish

Metal ties cut into the rubber boost hose

And the plastic ones snap... Saying that ive never tried the big daddy ties... They could possibly work but would still allow a bit of movement at a guess

Nope just logic.

Nope just logic.

What a moron

Been nowhere done nothing!!

Grrrr

Btw im on day 2 of no smoking so my patience is non existent

Apologies

Haha

one method ive tried with limited sucess is to get a jubliee clamp and strap it onto the plastic part of the intercooler it seenms th help the pipe stay in pace but im going to get the hard piping kit as all the other pipes are starting to fail since my new turbo is blowing them all to hell
