grief - £1,500 to have the gearbox and transfer box rebuilt on my 4x4 after 54,000. Are Skoda likely to cough anything if I write them a snotty? :(

Well they would have a hell of a PR job on their hands if they were to state that such a short mileage were a reasonable expectation of service life ! They might though try to avoid the issue alleging lack of correct care or maintenance etc. by you or a prior owner. If you bought the car new then you should have some coverage under legislation e.g. Sale of Goods act but not from Skoda it would be from ther dealer who sold you the car.

How old is the car?

"Placey" on here had a Scout and had a few problems with gearbox or diff. I think it was under warranty though.

More information needed, assuming it is out of warranty?

Number of owners, age, service history, main dealer or independant, mainly on or off road use?

A failure at 54,000 is not good, hard life or not I wouldn't be letting this one lie.

A full main dealer service history should stand you in good stead for a 'goodwill gesture'

Liabilities rest with the supplying dealer under the Sales of Goods Act (irrespective of whether it was purchased new or old). Unless it's been heavily abused/hit with a hammer, you'd be arguing that ~55,000 miles made it "not sufficiently durable" and therefore inherently faulty. As you've had some use from it, you may be expected to make a contribution for the repair.

If it's under warranty, then I think (as I'm not familiar with the terms as to what's covered) there would be a liability for Skoda, as the warranty is a binding contract with them under the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations.

Thanks for the replies, very useful - I will give it a go with Skoda and see what happens.
