diesel dilema

Featured Replies

Thinking of chopping in my other halfs 2001 1.6 Honda Civic auto. It only gets about 35mpg, which my Octy 4x4 Turbo will do most days. She likes the looks of the Leon which is the most important deciding factor for her. The Octy is too big (!)

We'd be looking at a 2003/04.

My previous Octy Vrs Mk2 170PD would average 42 mpg, with 47 mpg on a motorway, which for a diesel is pretty poor IMHO.

What do you 1.9 Octavia owners get in reality as the lower price and mileage of the 1.6 petrol is significant enough to make me wonder if this is not a better option.

I could probably use it once or twice a week when she goes to work via bus, to keep the miles down on my 4x4.

Cheers

My 1998 Octavia 1.9 SLX TDI usually manages between 50 and 55mpg, with a mixture of town and motorway driving. Best ever was 66mpg on a long motorway run. These are calculated from mileages between fill-ups to the brim. I don't believe the figures on the trip computer although they can be quite impressive, for example average mpg 82.1 on a recent 60-mile journey.

Even on my commute (12 miles from cold start, several assertive accelerations, a half-mile long steep climb one way) I see 45 to 48mpg (fill to fill, normally using the same actual pump, and backed up by computer). On longer (and same length but flatter) trips, I normally see at least low to mid 50s, and sometimes into the 60s.

44mpg worst case PD130.

I keep a chart of mpg. Over the last five years the average is 45mpg brim to brim. However, these are 80% short journeys around town with the boot weight near maximum and lots of acceleration at traffic lights. In winter the engine oil does not reach correct temperature.

I have now started to do regular 70 mile journeys with no boot weight and the average for these is 55mpg. The trip computer reads somewhere between 55 and 63 mpg at the end of the journey About half of the road has a 50mph limit, the rest 70mph and a small amount of town traffic.

These results agree with Ken's figures pretty well.

50-52mpg average on a 90bhp Ambiente TDI estate calculated by mileage against fuel used. Thats mainly driving around town and in traffic. The trip computer lies quite badly.

Click on the bottom milage icon in my sig. That shows what our 90bhp does.

Thanks for the replies. I expected 50 mpg easily achievable but good to hear it confirmed.

However to get some idea of prices, on Autotrader, there is two grand difference between two SX trim level Leons.

A 2005, 74k 110 Tdi £5299. £3299 for a 2004 38k 1.6 petrol. We would never make that back in fuel savings.

Like the look of the FR 150 though

Been getting about 45-50 mpg on my 110BHP octy on the daily commute between Sheffield and Chesterfield. Trip down to Cornwall and driving about down there averaged 60mpg (brim to brim). The trip computer readout on mine doesn't seem too far fetched.

I have owned 2 Octy diesel tdi. Both cars average over 50mpg. Both achieve 60+ when driven legally on the motorway. They are really very fuel efficient.

My 53 plate Octavia Elegance Estate TDi110 isn't quite as good as others claim theirs to be. I get a long term average of 42-43mpg. My wife uses it mostly and she does short daily trips plus a 7 mile each way run on a dual carriageway with a long hill at both ends. On a longer run it will get just over 50mpg, but figures of 60+mpg are never achieved on mine.....

Except for the odd short trip when on holiday, mine rarely does much less than a 12 mile run. On my trip to work (more or less level road until the climb at the end) the "trip mpg" mode climbs from values in the 20s up into the 50s before I hit the climb, which makes me think that your figures are a result of lots of stop-start, town and cold running.
