CR Engine braking

Does the CR engine do something funky to reduce engine braking and therefore save fuel? I've noticed it seems to have way less engine braking than my old 306HDI, to the point it actually accelerates down some hills from 70ish mph in 6th where the 306 would loose 10-15 mph on the same hill.

It's not got some form of variable valve timing to reduce compression has it?
