DSG driving etiquette

Featured Replies

I've never owned an automatic and this will be my first. I drove an automatic once for a day as part of a driving course but there was no tiptronic or sport setting.

My questions are:

- Can you shift into 'S' whilst on the move? If you can, will I have to ease off the accelerator... or can I keep my foot pressed down to maintain my speed/revs?

- Similarly, changing into +/- "manual" tiptronic - obviously it wouldnt be much of a gearbox if you couldn't knock it into tiptronic whilst on the move, but again do you have to ease of the throttle, or can you just keep a steady speed and let the box do the work.

Apologies if these questions make some of you hardened DSG users cringe... but I can't see anything in the manual other than don't try and engage N or R on the move.

Cheers ;)

You can pop it into Trip or Sport while on the move, you certainly wont need to ease off the throttle when putting it into trip but when you put it into Sport it will drop down 1, 2 or on occasion 3 gears, just be repaired for a surge although generally as soon as I hear it change down I plant my foot to the floor so I couldn't say off hand if it will surge much or not if you keep the throttle steady :)

I know this is a dull question but can you stick it straight into manual mode from the off, put the stick over to the +/- and use the paddles starightaway?

^^ Yes

Indeed you can, although I tend to just leave mine in D and use paddles when I want a bit more control i.e. overtaking or if the mood takes me on an A Road. You can use the paddles from D for things like overtaking anyway just drop a couple of gears, it will then change back to auto if you dont change gear for a little while.

this is how I generally drive it... I only put it in sport if I want my full attention on the road if i'm driving "briskly" :giggle:

as much as I like reading about all the "cool" stuff with the DSG I can't help but want mine NOW

Fingers double crossed for the end of this week - its been in the country for a nearly a week B)

This is what happens on a Golf DSG (6 speed). He explains overriding auto mode by using paddles at about half way through the vid.

I think it has all been said already above, Also dont worry about asking "Daft" questions... it was all a bit new to me as well, so I just gave it a try.

The witchcraft used in the gear box seems almost foolproof, it wont let you drop down too many gears, if its going to put the revs through the bonnet, and it wont change up if the revs are too low.

I usually drive in D and then knock it over to manual when I want "Briskness" but as said, you can just drop a few with the paddles whike it is still in D.

Is that Kermit The Frog talking in that vid

just one big no no do not select park if you are not stopped completly

I didn't know that but it makes sense. What happens?

It applies the parking brake and is not very happy at all and probably would stall too

Is there no protection to stop this happening?

I did a quick Google and if it's the same as other auto boxes there's a pin that stops this happening but I suppose if you pushed it in hard enough and at enough speed the pin would snap.

Ahhhhhh, dealer told me if I start using the paddles that I have to pop the stick into TT and back into D for the gearbox to take over again, learn something new every day!

I think that is wrong,

Seemed to remember someone saying if you hold the + paddle for a few seconds it will change back to Auto.
