Audi A2 1.4 TDi Engine

Featured Replies

Dunno if this has been discussed before? (most things I bring up on here seem to be old hat!)I was behind an A2 the other day and noticed its 1.4tdi badge. Anyone thought about grafting one into a felly? Is it a possibility? Was this used in a vw/seat anything? Seems like an interesting choice for lower tax and insurance. (i'm still not happy at paying £217 for my 1.9 felly truck!)

I cannot comment on the 1.4TDI you mentioned, but over here in Malta they seem to be able to put a Toyota 1NT motor (1.5 turbo Diesel) in almost any car. I had one in my old Hyundai accent and it got almost 60mpg. They get the same sort of mileage out of the favorit and felly with this motor. They use a flange (love that word) to mate it to the original gearbox. On the Favorit you do need to weld some cross braces as the chassis legs tend to get pushed apart from the extra weight and vibration, but apart from that its a good fit, V fast and VVV economical! an engine transplant here will cost in the region of 700 Euro and take 3 days.

yeah i've put a great deal of thought into doing that conversion.. great little engine. they have been fitted in polo's and lupo's and a few others too.

the actual mechanical fitting of the engine would be fairly straightforward but that's the easy bit.. it's all the electronical bits which would be a headache, plus you would need to figure out where to put the intercooler too..

Mechanical bits I think I could just about handle, the electrickery bit would be the bit that stumped me. Tricky, but not impossible then I guess? So like, when people have put TDi engines into fellys, they must have to get over the wiring headaches too?

no not really. wiring up the pd diesels and it's associated ecu and sensors is a completely different kettle of fish

With regards to the Toyota motor i mentioned all it requires is a 12V supply to the fuel pump :) nice and easy!

What Toyota car are these found in? This sounds too goo to be true!

pretty sure theyve in yaris's.

As for the a2 engine why theyre pricey and less documented than other transplants? If its to be different then wire away

These are found in Toyota Windy, Toyota Corrolla II, Toyota Starlet, Toyota Corsa (yes corsa not a vauxhaull), Toyota Tercel.

I dont think any of these cars i ever saw in the uk, except the starlet (mk2). There maybe other cars but thats all that springs to mind at the moment. If my 1.3 Fav dies i will put one of these in without hesitation! you will get the money back in fuel costs after a year!

If you Google for Toyota 1NT u will find lots of info.. there was also the 1N (no "T" so no turbo) this was much slower and drank more. but still a good motor.

EDIT: I forgot.. u need to also link up the throttle cable!! :) hehehe

Audi A2 is canbus so will be a complete ballache to fit into something older.

What does canbus mean?

the 1.4tdi is a cracking little motor as its 3 cyl its very smooth and pretty nippy too . As said fitting it into the felly would be easy but wiring it to work would be a complete ball ache. (saying that the later vw stuff has gone back to a seperate immob unit but still within the dash panel, so may be getting easier again)

no, one of those will use a kwp protocol, but sadly it's still not the right version of kwp to work with the oe immo box, best bet would be to get an ecu specialist to remove the immobilizer coding to let it run without the transponder

The little Tercel hatch was in this country in the '80s, complete with low ratio and 4x4. Rare then, you can imagine how they are now.

That would be a fantastic engine for this car.

If you have the skills, knowledge and patience then go for it!

I'm sure there is a european spec 1.2 TDI available in the A2 too.

yes there was phil, had an auto box with the crazy start/stop technology that switched the engine off if you stop for more than 40 seconds
