Why to people mask their number plate.

Featured Replies

Why is this??

I've posted loads of pictures of my car on this forum & its never bothered me.

Anyone can 'see' the number plate when you drive your car around, so its no different than showing your number plate on a forum.

I dont get it??

Or am i missing something?

On a similar note, I once post my Bank Account number on a forum just to point out that its perfectly safe as its written on cheques & is quite easily found out.

To prevent cloning.

It's far easier to collect possible number plates on the internet rather than driving round looking for them.

I've known people be a victim of it through internet forums. But obviously the risk is upto you.

Publicly listing bank account details is another discussion entirely!

As Steve said, to prevent cloning mainly, as i know well.

My current car was cloned last year, and "my car" was used in a robbery.

I returned from holiday to find several notes through the door from the local police, wanting a word.

Fair enough.

Makes sense. But I've heard that people who clone cars get their info from leaked DVLA data.

Wasnt there something about this in the news a while back....

... yes there was: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8487381.stm

Well what's easier - getting access to hacked/leaked data or browsing a few likely forums and car sales websites....

I wouldn't take the chance myself - but to each his own.

There are loads of ways to get your car cloned, it's all about minimising risks and taking whatever steps you can.

Unfortunately we can't unscrew our number plates and drive around or feed the DVLA false information, but we can mask our number plates online...

must admit i never did it untill a year or so ago, but its so easy to do [now i know how] its not worth the risk emoticon-0148-yes.gif

+1 to all the above

Simple phase "don't make yourself an easy target"!!!! B)

Would guess that your cheque book doesn't typically have a global audience of 2 billion users. Your credit card number is printed across the front of your card, and possibly also on your cc statements...would you post that on an internet forum?

By that logic, everyone can 'see' where you live, do you mind posting where you live? also where/when you work? :D

I can see your point but blanking a plate on a pic isnt too much of a hassle for what its worth.

Every little helps trust me, the last thing you want is for some one with a similar car to you using you plate to commit theft of fuel or such like offences because at a glance through a police computer it will come back to the correct car ie a fabia vrs in red and then you will end up with lots of letters on your door requesting payment etc.

All you can do with a bank account number is pay in to it tho lol

You can also put it in other forms of id etc....it dosn't take much info to find that you have run up a credit debit!!! B)

For direct debit stuff I only need to give account number, sort code (like tv licence, gas/elec, phone insurance etc).

Direct debit fraud

On 7 January 2008, Jeremy Clarkson found himself the subject of direct debit fraud after publishing his bank account and sort code details in his column in The Sun to make the point that public concern over the 2007 UK child benefit data scandal was unnecessary. He wrote, “All you'll be able to do with them is put money into my account. Not take it out. Honestly, I've never known such a palaver about nothing”. Someone then used these details to set up a £500 direct debit to the charity Diabetes UK. In his next Sunday Times column, Clarkson wrote, “I was wrong and I have been punished for my mistake.″[3] Under the terms of the direct debit guarantee, the payment should have been returned.

I must be the only one who uses online banking we can now do to keep a check on my DD's along with the other stuff. I don't trust everyone I pay with a cheque but I'm yet to be mugged off via a Direct debit

Well, you could try posting your bank account number on an internet forum if you wanted to change that. :D

Best practice is never to publish anything you wouldn't be comfortable with everyone in the world knowing. Imagine the scammers and thieves that you wouldn't dream of handing over your details to, address, VRN or bank details if they asked you for it and don't publish them on the internet, once they are available, they are effectively 'out' and you cannot put that genie back in the bottle.

If I wanted to use a Fabia I've stolen to go racing/rob someone etc first thing I'd do is go to google images and search for 'fabia' till I find the same model/colour with plates and use them, much easier to not get stopped in a stolen car if you are using plates with the same model and colour, you post up your pride and joy on the net with plates and its your door plod are knocking on.

Thats what happened with mine, it was in Red Fabia vRS that was involved in the Robbery, so they came knocking on my door as it matched perfectly, but in that time, they then found the stolen "cloned" car abandoned, and then realised it wasn't me, as mine was parked on the drive, whilst i was abroad.

I changed my plate from the original to stop any hassle in the future too.
