Stretched tyres: To stretch or not to stretch?

Featured Replies

Ordered my new alloys to arrive soon, deep dish so naturally im wanting to get stretched tyres, only a light stretch mind.

Are they safe? Anyone had any problems with them? Don't really fancy a tyre overtaking me on the motorway.

Wrong kinda question on here, general opinion will be stretch kills, it's unsafe and looks horrible.

Looks a bit cloudy out so there could be a chance of rain, go buy some steels and put wet weather tyres on. Then buy another set and get some snow tyres, get some snow chains just to be safe.

In answer to the question, yeah, I personally wouldnt go too far, but thats up to you. Done a bit of reading up, no massive issues just dont try putting a 165 on a 10j rim

I've got 205s on a 8j rim

Take it no problems tas?

Bit worried due to some of the horror stories on the net and a certain topic on pistonheads.

No problems at all mate.

i was advised to get for my porsche twists,

fronts are 7j et55 (advised 195/40/17)

rears are 8.5j et55? maybe (advised 205/40/17)

any advances?

Sounds about right Scott

I hav a 215 on a 9j rears. Bin on 14months now no worries at all

Front and rear 205/40/17

Had the same set up

205's go on an 8.5j wheel no probs hardly a big stretch at all

205's may well go on a 8.5j wheel, but they are below the minimum recommended width for that wheel. (should be min 225)

Probably not a big deal, and you probably won't notice any handling problems.

BUT.....

why fit something that is outside the scope of the manufacturers recommendations for something as important as your tyres, simply for the sake of fashion or looks?

It could cause problems with your insurance - if you told them that you intended to fit a tyre / wheel combination that was specifically not recommended by the tyre manufacturers, do you think they would say its ok?

My advice would be to stick within the range of recommended tyre widths for the rim.

Speed ratings aren't so important (despite what some people have said on other threads) W rated tyres are not compulsory - V or in some circunstances H rated are fine - it is the use to which they are being put that determines their suitability (ie H or T rated winter tyres in winter).

So an insurance company won't invalidate your insurance for not having W rated tyres (unless the use is inappropriate) but they will if the tyre is completely wrong for the rim.

i would do what you like mate, put some stretched tyres if you like, iv got slight stretch on my standard wheels on the front so they dont rub, as long as your not going for a mad amount of stretch then i think it will be absolutly fine.

p.s cant see why people come on a thread that is about stretched tyres when they have no other view other than everything on the car being exactly as the manufacturer specifies, makes no sence

Absolutely - its your car, do exactly as you please.

I posted because the o/p may not realise the implications of putting the wrong tyres on. Not saying it is wrong or will make a death trap to do it, - but the insurance companies are always happy to have an easy way out of paying up and they do examine cars subject to a claim, and they do reject claims for similar things.

At no point did I say everything on the car being exactly as the manufacturer specifies. In fact I pointed out that the manufacturers standard of W rated tyres is not needed.

I posted on a thread about stretched tyres, with a view point about stretched tyres - seems to make sense to me?!
