MDI -should it charge ipod?

Featured Replies

Very pleased with the MDI generally but got in the car yesterday to find a lack of tunes -turns out the ipod battery was completely flat. Surely the MDI should also be charging the ipod through the lead when its connected and in use?! :wonder: If not its abit of a ball-ache to have to charge it up yourself frequently....!

Yeah mine charges my iphone

Coincidentally I've just checked mine and my iPod touch charges when connected with MDI cable but only when the ignition is on. Only had the car a week and still finding out things about it!

My ipod classic 120gb charges while on mdi.

I've been using MDI for eight months and in that time I've found the ipod flat a couple of times, it appears that every now and then the mdi doesn't turn off the ipod when you turn off the car and it runs itself totally flat. A couple of times I've had to reset the ipod as it had frozen up, never had to do that on any other dock.

I think the MDI is excellent especially on the bigger touch screen headunits but I think their are still a couple of bugs that need sorting. I suppose it's difficult when you are trying to make something that is compatible with all ipods, hardrives and memory sticks.

Experienced the same.

As I understand it, there has to be some juice in the battery (enough for the ipod to turn on) for the system to recognise it. Once it has recognised that there's something there it will start charging it. It may just be that your ipod had run flat?

Mine definitely charges mine but won't recognise a flat ipod (discovered this the other day).

There is a firmware upgrade for the MDI which can be installed that fixes a number of iPod related issues.

My ipod (120gb classic) seems to carry on playing even after the ignition is switched off, is this one of the bugs they've fixed. My cars a March 2012 so would it have the updated firmware, or do I need to get it updated manually?

As above I've found that quite often when you turn off the ignition the iPod remains 'on' after you get out the car which can result in a dead flat iPod-battery. Once it's completely flat the mdi won't detect it to either play or start charging again so you are left tuneless until you charge ur back up yourself :-(

Having said all that this was happening with a fairly old iPod nano. Since I've put a new one in the car it's not been a problem (i guess the new iPod nano has a better auto-off function?). This is on a 2011 vRS. No idea if they've updated the mdi software for 2012

It charges my iPhone when I use the mdi, apart from the other day when my mdi no longer seems to work on my phone I keep getting the same message saying accessory is not compatible with iPhone. Anyone else had this problem?

Mine drops the connection every so often and I need to unplug it and plug it back in. It's fixes it.

It's a bit of a nause the way it searches through the menus too - nowhere as good as using the iPod.

Iphone always says its not compatable on screen should still work though just knock the message off.

My iPhone (3Gs) connects and charges, but won't appear on the Columbus.

An iPod Touch does (with the same cable) and USB thumbdrives seem to work (with the USB cable).

I've had a problem with my iPhone dock connector, but replaced it with a new one. Same result.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

I have the latest (I think) firmware installed on the MDI as I updated it last week from info on the My GTI website.
