VRS thoughts..

Featured Replies

I've been paying very close attention to my MPG of late, more than usual as I've been working hard with gear changes as part of my IAM training.

I never speed so on a 1.8T Octy 4x4 K reg, being very sensible, sticking just below all speed limits, surely my MPG should be higher than a nip over 30mpg, I would hope around 40mpg at least? My most ridiculous ever GTI purchase was around 35mpg and that was with custom remap, KO4 turbo, the lot! and that was driving like a complete idiot!! My VR6 did around 17-20 MPG which still gives me nightmares. :S

Am seriously thinking about going diesel, how does the VRS compare?

The best MPG I had from my 4x4 was 34mpg, and that was when standard and unmapped. 32mpg was my average on mixed long journeys.

On a stage 1 map, 30mpg was the best I could get. 28mpg was my mixed long journey average.

Now I'm at stage 3, I can get 34+mpg

The 4x4 is always going to be at a disadvantage fuel economy-wise due to the extra weight and drag of the 4x4 system.

iirc the 4x4 is between 100-200kg heavier than the FWD petrol models, due the weight of 4x4 & suspension subframe and extra chassis weight.

LPG might be a consideration. A LPG 4x4 probably works out cheaper than a diesel 4x4 in total ownership terms ( car + conversion + fuel bills ).

There are several LPG owners on here who can give a better idea as to costs.

I get 45mpg out of my normal vrs for my daily commute, the 4x4 must be a thirsty beast!

The 4X4 is a 150BHP as standard

Has a smaller turbo too IIRC

Check the coolant temp sensor , as that can cause alot of issues with fuelling and lower the MPG

If you have a black one , change it for the green one asap

The fuelling with the CTS if faulty can cause issues with the cat too

Nice car though

The best MPG I have ever had was 37MPG driving it very, very boringly but I couldn't drive like that all the time, what's the point of owning it?

I usually get mid to high 20's, all around town.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again, MPG is for gays

Sarah

mine is yellow does that make it more or less economical than the green one :p

I got 45+ on my way from Bristol to Huddersfield last week with the cruise set to 60. very nice plesent drive at that time in the morning,

on way back it was 42 with me driving in most places :giggle:

I dont go silly as my job requires my licence and I cant get any more points on it. 6 is enough ne way

Seems very low. I average about 42mpg and thats with a re-map driving normally.

When was the last time it was serviced?

Yellow????

Strange one to me

The CTS does effect the MPG , as the old black ones go faulty , not IF , but WHEN

Then it will think that the engine is cold , even when hot , and will do like an auto choke and put extra fuel in

They are not that expensive , so worth putting a new one in if you have any queries about it

lol... Think you may need to read Bumtishs' post again....

P.S..... mine's silver!!!

Thats spot on for the 4x4 :-)

I get 30 most week.

If you put just a cold air intake you will hit 27/28 and driving hard with that on will put you into the 22s :-)

Consistantly ;

33-35 mpg on 25 mile journey to work (5 mile urban 12 mile B roads, 8 mile motorway),

32 average since last reset about a month ago so over 1000 miles,

37 if I drive it really gently , best ever was 39.

Mid 20's if I am having fun ...

Same engine spec /turbo as the VRS but more weight and lower geared.

Or do the opposite and think engine is warm, and not inject extra fuel when cold start which makes car hesitant and lumpy at start up until warmed up.

If car is running ok I would doubt the temp sensor is playing up but agree as a cheap cost part can be replaced easy.

most if not all the post 2001 4x4 have same K03s turbos in them.

I wish I got 30 mpg consistantly. More like 25 but do drive most of my journey around town and urban areas. Touched 40 mpg today coming back from a motorway drive using cruise control I fitted last week

Well, this is the first time I've ever caught you in a "blonde moment" Sarah!! :giggle:

I changed my Temp sensor for the green one from ebay for about £8 and it did make a big diferance i went from a 34mpg avarage to 45mpg tbh is was around the same time as i changed the split oil breather pipe. But it was easy and cheap to do

Hardcore mapped Octy VRS amd driving like a grandad =

:D

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to do better than that in one with a smaller turbo?

L.M.F.A.O.

I got 41.1 mpg over a 110 mile trip from Somerset to Portsmouth down the a303 and then the motorway but when using it to go work 2.5 mile each way I get about 18mpg. :(
