Air con woe! condensor hell

Featured Replies

Had my air con serviced+regassed last year by skoda and it was ok for a few months then this spring tried the air con and it felt more like someone blowing air onto me than the real deal. I plugged VCDS in and got a reading of air pressor sensor fault.

Had someone come have a look at it and they said its leaking from the condensor (he checked it what looked like and sounded like a toner probe/fox and hound) and he pointed to what i thought was the radiator at the front. The condensor sits in front of the rad and takes up the same space. Price to fit new condensor and regas quoted £270.

I declined for now as i dont have enough money

I know next to nothing about air con in cars. Does all of this sound plausible?

yeah. Ive seen in halfords a kit that stops leaks in air con systems and also the refill canisters etc. A lot cheaper than the £300 youve been quoted but never used them!

the halford kit stops leaks in seals and pipes, damage to the condensor is usually through stone damage so the stop leak kit is unlikely to fix it

also i believe it is illegal now to regas a system you know to leak,

yes spot on. As releasing the gas into the atmosphere knowingly is illegal.

Even if the sealant stops the leak, it is likely to fail again in the near future, you might as well wait until you can afford the proper fix.

Bare in mind that the aircon system uses a pump that is constantly running (no magnetic clutch) it uses a bypass solenoid valve. No gas means little on no lubrication oil for the compressor. So £270 NOW or £800 later if the pump seizes up.

It is illegal to regas a system you know to leak. This is not a problem as any test would be done with OFN.

There is no effective means of repairing a damaged condenser. I have seen people try evaporator sealing products such as DP2 but they usually only provide a temporary solution on condensers.

Don't add sealers to the refrigerant circuit. It isn't going to provide a permanent solution and may causes blockages elsewhere in the system.

The compressor has a protected oil supply and the OCR is set to prevent lack of oil destroying the compressor.

If the system leaks down to atmospheric air pressure due to a hole, then non-condensable gases (air) will get in. The compressor will then overheat and die.

Same result - you just get to keep your £800 for slightly longer
