Gearbox oil change

Featured Replies

My fabiavrs is on 105k, have noticed the gearchanges being quite notchy, would you recommend a gear oil change, the last mechanic I asked said it was waste of time.

Worth a try, but it's probably worn syncros. Cable adjustment is also worth doing.

Worth a pop

My lupo was notchy in 1st and 3rd

Oil change and its like brand new

On 99k

This was recommended by Skoda.

Gearbox holds about 2.5 litres. (picture)

Needs splined tool (picture) to remove drain-plug and filler/ level plug. (picture)

Skoda reckons the gear-oil oil is in there for life, unless there is loss through an oil seal failure etc.

^^^^^^^ looks right....I used Millers motorsport oil.........drain the oil hot...do it on a warm day after you have been for a drive....then leave it draining for 1hr to get all the crap out...leave car on level surface.......I redo mine every 5 to 6 years....much better....remember to do the drain and filler plugs back up to 25Nm (18lb ft). B)

Good tip is make sure you can remove filler plug before drain plug!

I know they says its 'good for life'

But most dealers ideas of life is a 3 year warranty period!

Made an unbelievable difference to my 6sp lupo

But most dealers ideas of life is a 3 year warranty period!

Toooooo bloody true!!!!!!! B)

I would of thought all car gearboxes need fresh oil 80-100k. miles, For life, no chance :giggle:

For life in consumer products is 8years according to my TV warranty.

Stick some new oil in there fella!

These filled for life oils are nonsense. Yes oils have come a long way over the years, but even Hypoid oils must break down over time. The pressures between meshed gears is incredible under load.

AFAIK some models don't even have a drain plug at the bottom and you have to use one of those syphon things, presumably via the filler hole.

  • 6 months later...

Hey folks.

Right basically my problem is this.

A few months back I wanted to re-adjust my gear lever so I locked the the gearstick with a pin of appropriate size then went to lock the shift mechanism on the gearbox. Tried to push the locking pin in but it wouldn't budge. I got pair of pliers to try and move it and it snapped off. Not just the pin but the metal casing/plug that the pin goes in leaving a hole where the pin used to be. I blocked it up with some sealant as a temporary fix (being careful to just put it on the outside of the hole and not get any inside). I then best guessed the position that the shaft had to be in and adjusted the gear levers.

Recently it has been leaking and so I have lost a lot of gear oil out of the hole so I need to:

a) replace the pin which I think is "detent pin" 02M301358A. Does anyone know how this fits in as I need to get the other half of it out. Does it screw or just push in?

B) change the oil. Where is the fill hole on top of the gearbox. I've looked but either being blind or blonde and can't see it. And on that not whereabouts is the drain plug?

My gearbox is FJW which I think is the same as the earlier Fabia vRS box (the longer geared one).

Any help greatly appreaciated!

Phil

Make sure you use the 6 speed oil. Around £25 a litre from skoda :o

I bought some of the 5 speed stuff for my vRS (skoda messed up) which was £6 a litre. Ali at unit 18 said the 5 speed stuff will overheat or something in the 6 speed box.

There should be two torx (anti-tamper style) plugs one at the very bottom the other higher up on the oposite side of the gearbox to the drain plug!.

When you adjusted the cables did you follow the UTUBE video or my written guide????? As the dirrection of turning is different which has confused alot of people.....I even had someone post on my thread the incorrect way (for Fabia) using that utube video.

My post for Fabia.

Can anyone tell me what oil is needed for the gearbox?

The correct oil is available from your Skoda dealer, they will have the part number on ETKA.

The correct oil is available from your Skoda dealer, they will have the part number on ETKA.

And they will charge a missively inflated price for the pleasure. The stealership is my last resort.

I want to know what spec the oil is so i can go to my local auto factors and pick up some oil at a decent price. If someone here happened to be "the font of all skoda fabis vrs knowlege" and could tell me the gearbox oil spec it would be a lovely head start?

Trouble is Skoda dont tell you what the spec is in any literature. Its certianly not 75w90 or 75w80 from what ive seen, seems to be much thinner than that.

How often do you change the gearbox oil though? Might as well invest and buy the propper stuff so you know its right, ive seen people use the wrong stuff and come rather unstuck.

Thanks.

Ans yes that is exactly what I did.

Although the difference on my box is that the locking lever on the box isn't a lever but a little pin you push in to lock the shift mechanism.

Will have another look at where the pin snapped off and see if I can remove the remnants of it ready to replace with a new one.

Phil

Other than people who will never admit they were wrong I have never seen anybody use non OEM and not then go back to OEM a few months later.

I have made the mistake in the past in a BMW, never again!!

Just pay the extra few quid and get the stuff from the dealer.

I will contact the stealers regarding the oil. Or get in touch with the Seat garage in Northern Ireland who is much cheaper than my local! lol

eurocarparts tell me its 75w90 and they sell it for £4.58 per litre and i need 1.98L. Total £9.16 and its in stock.

Skoda swindon tell me i need 75w90 and they sell it for £26.17 per litre and I need 2.3L. Total £78.51 and they have to order it in.

Now maybe the skoda stuff is a slightly higher quality oil which will last longer than the cheaper non-OEM stuff, but it needs to last 8.5 times longer given the price difference!! Regarding the oil volume, i would stake money on the 2.3L being the "in the factory, bone dry" it needs 2.3L, drained down from the plug in the garage it takes 1.98L to refil as there will be some volume trapped in the cooler and parts of the box.

I will report back on tuesday next week when i have filled the box with non-OEM oil to let you know the initial thoughts... possably looking for somewhere to refurb a knackered gearbox!!

This is what I use.....

http://www.millersoils.net/1_Millers_frame_MOTORSPORT.htm

I've had it in for 3-4 years...no problems.....the shift can be a bit recalcitrant first thing on a winters days....but when it warms up........really smooth!!! Also the data sheet lists the type approvals (performance profile)..this is important when checking an oil besides the viscosity! B)

Opieoils sell in 1lt

"the shift can be a bit recalcitrant first thing on a winters days"

And OEM is perfect freezing cold or red hot.

Even that slight difference goes some way to show how its not just about the viscosity.

@1-600-Matt

Go on eurocarparts and see if the cheap oil is the same as 5speed box. If so its the wrong oil.

The 5speed oil at skoda is £6.50 a litre. Which I'd guess ECP list for all fabias. skoda is generally the cheapest place for engine and gearbox oil I've found.
