Possible future problems?

Featured Replies

Was out earlier in the yeti with no problems, went back out an hour later and steering column, steering wheel, ignition barrel all seized solid :o

Didnt want to force it just incase something breaks so left it another hour and tried again....and everything is fine and moving as they should be :wonder:

Its a 10 plate 'S' model with only 5500 miles on the clock, anyone else had a problem like this?

Cheers

Not the steering lock was it :wonder: Had similar before with the wheel at a particular angle.

Maybe worth mentioning it at the dealers, just incase something else happens, they have the 'occurrence' on record.

If the steering wheel was turned to the left when you shut down then I'm more convinced than ever it's steering lock, happened a couple of times on the wife's Fabia (she rang me first time describing your same symptoms). Freed it off by pulling down on the wheel and turning the key at the same time.

this is perfectly noirmal and is not a fault with your yeti

it is a mechanical device that drops a thick pin into the steering column to prevent it turning.

there are normally 4 to 6 positions around the column for the pin to locate into.

under the circumstances you describe, with the steering turned slightly what most likely happened is the pin located correctly into one of these with slight side pressure from the wheels.

on removing the key the pin is spring loaded into one of the locations thus locking the steering.

when you next put the key into the ignition the side pressure prevents the pin from extracting fully, thus the steering is still locked.

TP is correct...

the proper way to release the lock is to gently rock the steering from side to side whilst turning the key at the same time

+1 I've had this "problem" with other cars.

I also have found the steering lock hard to undo. Perhaps ask for the mechanism to be lubricated at the next service or under guarantee.
