Can't mount radio in uppermost DIN slot?

Featured Replies

I have bought the double DIN cupholder (for VW Polo) as mentioned in this thread for my Fabia 2004, hoping it would fit nicely and be a solid replacement for the standard one. It seems to only fit in the lowest part of the DIN slots, which means the radio needs to go in the uppermost. However, there is a cable obstructing the radio. I can't see any good reason for the cable to go in and out again as it does, is it a production mistake? Is it easy to relocate? It is the black "furry" cable, all others can be moved away.

Also, how can I secure the cupholders and radio better? Now, they just "slot in", and are easy to pull out again.

Black "fury" cable in right of picture should go behind the horizontal plastic bar....if you can't disconnect it and re-thread it then cut a slot thro' the bar and push it thro'...the top space is for the DIN radio!!! You might also need to remove the glovebox (8screws max) and dash end panel then reach up behind the facia and gentle pull the wires back whilst you push the HU into the DIN slot!!! B)

Thanks, that's what I suspected. I found out that some of the wires in the furry cable had a plug that seemed to be easy to disconnect, but some other wires went further down... I hope I don't have to cut inside.

I have fitted the radio (and a Parrot, the blue box) without needing to remove the glovebox - not easy, but I think I could do it in the uppermost position as well. However, how do I secure it better? Right now, it is only pushed right in. Is it normal to use screws on the sides of a radio?

The radio is supposed to be in the upper slot???

Thats how they come from the factory....with either a drawer or cubby shelf in the lower slot!! B)

Presumably you're talking about an aftermarket unit? It should have come with a metal DIN sized cage, typically a couple of inches deep. This goes into the DIN sized hole and is secured by bending back metal tabs at the sides, top and bottom. The stereo unit itself then pushes back and locks into the cage. If it won't push back far enough to click into the cage it will probably be obstructed by the wiring and you'll need to push the loom out of the way so the stereo can go back far enough.

Just cut plastic ! Doesnt cause any issues

Julie: exactly! Thanks :) Actually, the cage seems a bit too large to fit in the upper slot, but I can force it in there. It is only the loom that is in the way, so I either need to cut plastic (not very happy about it, but...) or try to disconnect and reconnect the cable.

How do I fit the cup holder then? It goes in the hole in the back, maybe that's enough?

Should all fit in, you can remove one of the side supports which will give you extra room for wiring.

Best interior ever!!

Thank you all, now everything fits perfectly! (I had to use some silicon as lube, and bend the metal cage a bit, because it was a thigh fit..)
