easily scratched plastic

Featured Replies

Hi,

Had my Yeti now since end of December 2010 and it has been brilliant, however, although i have been regularly cleaning my car (weekly) since its arrival and would consider myself fairly adept at maintaing a very clean and well looked after car (Good products from polishedbliss helps with this) i was wondering if anyone would be able to offer advice on getting slight swirl marks off the black shiny plastic trim that edges the front window and rear quarter windows as it does detract somewhat from the overall finish and i am sure i cant be the only yeti owner with this problem as they do seem to mark easily despite carefull and light hand pressure washing.

In anticipation.

Hi scottish.

This stuff is well worth investing in.

Armoural, works VERY well on plastic and venal, NEVER apply it to your steering wheel as you don't want that slipping out of your hands while driving.

If you are referring to swirls on the gloss black pillar trims then they need polishing out like you would paint. Then it's a matter of careful washing using the 2 bucket method, one to wash, one to rinse.

Along with various other aspects of my life I restore / renovate Bang & Olufsen audio/video kit which has lots of perspex type plastic trims etc - I use a system called Micro Mesh, a system to take hazing etc off plane cockpit screens - it works brilliantly, suggest you do a search on either flightstore or Micro Mesh - from memory the kit cost abouit £20 but its lasted forever!

Hope this helps

Hi,

I personally think any non-liquid wax woul be good.

I use this: http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product_detail.asp?T1=MEG+G7014J and I think its very good, I also apply it on the bodywork.

I know this product is called Gadget Care (I got it for the Bolero screen) it says eleswhere on the net that it works on any type of plastic. Amusingly, Brasso say that it is their first new product for over a century!!

Having not used the new Brasso product, I can't speak with authority....but I'd actually have said that the original Brasso would be better given that it's a mild abrasive. Similarly I'll also be trying a soft application of T-Cut followed by a mildly cleaning polish like '3M Imperial Handglaze'. I'd then finish off with something from Autoglym like their 'Super Resin Polish' or 'Car Glass Polish' and last of all a quick coat of their 'Extra Gloss Protection'. Slightly off topic, the Extra Gloss Prtotection helps the paintwork against bird poo marking the finish.

Many thanks for the reply,It has already been mentioned to me to try a product called micro mesh which is used extensively in the aeronautical world.Anyone suffering from a similar problem to the one i,ve mentioned should look this up on you tube and see the results on an underwater camera housing lens.I will probably give this a try. Thanks again

>Contains silicone and anti-static <

A few years ago any car polish that contained silicones made the paintwork photo sensitive so any mark that was left for more than a day was permantently photographed into the paint! I don't know if modern paints have eliminated this but I'd be wary of it.

Fred

If you go the brasso route use silver polish its finer in the paticulates than Brasso

The Micro mesh system leaves a virtually scratch/ringfree finish, of course the length of time spent for the finish improves the finish

With perspex covers on B&O stuff I achieve almost as original results!
