vRS engine warning light

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Had something a little odd happen today, took my brother in law out for a spin in the car, was giving it a bit when I noticed the engine light started flashing, didnt affect the power delivery and literally went out after about 3 seconds. Car drove fine with no problems and didnt do it again in the rest of the drive (15 mins or so).

Having had VAG cars for a while and knowing their electronics are pretty sensitive (every now and again get a warning bong and no fault and ESP fault on my MK6 Golf, been to dealers and theres nothing wrong with it) I'm not worried. I Suspect the ECU was probably having a funny 5 mins with the car being so new (still only done 300 miles), perhaps picked up a problem with the fuel as its currently running on a mix of 97/98 RON fuel.

Has anyone else had anything similar happen with theirs? Be interested to know.

happens to me sometimes when giving it a bit , usualy when i accidently hit the kick down and the engine revs up to 6800 in 4th,hate when that happens

Still haven't got mine yet but had a Polo where the EML would come on when it wanted and then go out. My Astra also did it but only if you'd really screwed it and then out of nowhere started driving sensibly

yes has both epc and engine warning light both together then the car ran like a bag of poo, now in the dealers over the weekend and they are not sure whats wrong, very ****ed off, they say i will get it back tuesday, we will see.

what engine light was it? can you find an image of it?

Hi Janner, it was the control system for exhaust light (one that looks like an engine towards bottom right of rev counter). Guess thats to do with the catalyst/lamda sensor yeah?

Going to keep an eye on it but it went out pretty quickly, didnt affect performance and didnt come on again. I've experienced funnies on both my MK5 and MK6 Golfs so probably the ECU being oversensitive I guess.

I have had this "exhaust" light come on as well.

When I first start the car up and back out of the garage I use the brake pedal to control the reversing speed - sometimes the exhaust light comes on :wonder:

If I turn the engine off and restart the light goes off and does not return. The light never comes on when the car is being driven.

The dealers could find no fault.

I've had the exhaust light too , when booting it from lights when the car was new... the dealer had put in 95 ron though.. I put it down to this, and it hasn't come on again since.. when getting my locks done ect, the ECU had logger a misfire fault at the time, I didn't clear it, as I wanted to leave it for when it gets serviced...

loads of guys on seatcupranet have this light flash up when accelerating. strange one

When I got mine the dealer had put 95 in it and the light came on for a few seconds most of the time when accelerating hard, once I filled it up with super it hasn't happened since. That was about 2000 miles ago :)

Flashing EML is usually a misfire, pretty much impossible to say why though.

I'd hazard a guess at a change in fuel types, my master tech said they run best on 98 and no lights come on when moving fast... he noted that the demo had its light come on because it had 95 so maybe as simple as that. Burnong fuel before the piston has reached the top? Can't remember the name for it...

Yeah suspect it could be the mix of BP, Shell and Esso fuel thats currently running though it. Sounds like i'm not alone either so that puts me at ease a bit more. Not sure if its the same for you guys but I do notice the car runs a tiny bit lumpy at idle, certainly when its cold. Not enough to see a change in revs but good description is that it feels like the dog is in the boot moving around :-) Anyone experience anything similar?

I had a light flash (Couldnt tell you wich one tho) when I was taking someone for a spin as well, Im pretty sure its cos I booted it too hard whle it was cold.

Ah...just a hunch but perhaps its down to the cat not being warm enough. Oil temp was nearly 80 degrees but I guess certain elements of the car (Particularly the exhaust) take a bit longer to warm up than the engine.

I dont know just clutching at straws really. However does anyone else experience a slightly lumpy idle on their vRS? Its done it from brand new so think its just characteristic of the car more than anything.

Yep mine is like it everytime from cold, dealer said it was the supercharger an that pretty much all of them do it nothing to worry about etc.

Dunno about yours but mine only does it for the first mile at most from cold

I dont think your too far from the truth. Happened to me twice, both times I've been in a rush, jumped in the car and shot off. So engine cold. I now always let the car idle for a minute or so before driving off. Seems much happiee when you do that

Supercharger isn't active unless your driving harsh and its not in operation on tickover, so im not sure on that
