Bluetooth audio using iPod

Featured Replies

Just fitted a new head unit (JVC KD-R821BT) to g/f's Fabia - all works fine and it's a great little unit. One of the things it has is Bluetooth audio streaming which is great as it means you can connect an iPod and control it via the head unit.

When I was fitting it on Sat and messing around with the settings etc, if I connected a mobile phone (Nokia) and streamed audio via that, the track title/artist was displayed on the head unit. However, if I connect an iPod (Touch, 2nd gen) via Bluetooth, the audio plays fine but no track information shows up on the screen.

Does anyone know why this might be? Is it an Apple thing? Something to do with the way they've implemented Bluetooth on iPods?

It's not a disastrous issue, but it would be nice to get the track info displayed on the screen if possible. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

I think it is an apple thing. Their bluetooth implementation is cr@p. can't connect to anything but another iphone, etc etc....I can't even BT print.emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Are the tracks on iPod in MP3 format? Apple may have put them on iPod as their own file system.

Try loading an MP3 onto it if that works you will need to alter settings in iTunes to change the way it saves music

Audio streaming via bluetooth does not support any name display on any headunit from any player as its not part of the specification. When streaming via BT your headunit simply becomes a bluetooth headset as far as the phone / mp3 player is concerned, so consider it like plugging a pair of headphones into the player.

The only way to get track display is to have the ipod connected via USB cable to the headunit, not sure if the JVC unit offers this option.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Looks like the prospects are not great for displaying track info from an iPod! The strange thing is, when I tried streaming using my g/f's Nokia mobile, the track name came up on the head unit display....which would imply that it's an Apple thing rather than a JVC thing.

Thanks for the idea Traff, I'll investigate further...

mannyo, the JVC does have a USB port for iPod connection so I guess we'll just have to use that if we want track names for now

Hi slicendice, what you are looking for is the profile avrcp ver 1.3. KD-R821BT claims to support 1.3 of avrcp, thus it can be the ipod that is probably of version 1.0.

I'm sure I read somewhere that iOS5 will support transmitting track metadata over bluetooth.

Then it is just a matter if ipod touch g2 can upgrade to IOS5 I guess, or if slicendice sticks with the Nokia of course :D

Thanks for the updates

As it happens, it seems there is another issue with using a Nokia phone with the unit which may make the track name thing a bit of a moot point. The head unit can only support 1 music device connected via Bluetooth at any one time; strangely, whenever the Nokia phone connects via Bluetooth (simply to use as a phone), it grabs the Bluetooth audio as well - so if the iPod is connected at the time, then it boots it off. There doesn't seem to be a way to tell the Nokia not to grab the audio connection.

So it looks like it may have to be a wired connection for the iPod :( But I guess that means that at least there will be track info shown on the head unit!

I have had the BT Audio factory kit retro fitted which works well with the phone.  However when streaming music, the track info doesn't display.  Can anyone advise how to get this working?

iPod touch 2nd gen can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

Can you not set it so that you choose Audio Streaming on one item and phone on the other? My other half's older KD-R711 will do that (per the manual, not what I have tried btw) - grab a look at the manual to see if its possible?
