What to replace my mk1 Octavia with?

Featured Replies

My Octavia Silverline (hatchback, 53 plate) has clocked up 225K miles and it's time to replace it, but with what?

I do a lot of motorway miles (about 25K a year), need a good sized boot, and it's got to be good to drive

I have narrowed it down to a shortlist of 3.

1) VW Passat Estate 2.0 TDI 140PS SE Bluemotion2 (mk7), VED band C, 61.4mpg, Very nice looks. Tyres are expensive. Good boot access but it the boot is smaller than my hatchback with the seats up.

2) Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI CR 140 PS DPF Elegance, VED band D, 57.6mpg, Good size boot but access has a annoying step. 15% off new car is tempting.

3) Skoda Superb Estate 2.0 TDI CR 140PS DPF Elegance, VED band F, 51.4mpg, Tyres are very expensive. Huge boot with better access than octavia. Door storage poorer than Octavia.

I have looked at all 3 cars, and they all have good and bad points.

What would you go for? Have you found any major issues with any of these cars? Any other comments welcome.

I am hoping to test drive these cars soon, and that may make the decision easier!

The ocy gets my vote

All of them are pretty similar and good cars.

My advice is to look at SEAT Leon or Exeo. I personally like design, at least they stand out of crowd.

Exeo is basically previous generation Audi A4 (B7)

And Leon has the same platform A5 as Octavia, Superb, Golf etc.

2) Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI CR 140 PS DPF Elegance, VED band D, 57.6mpg, Good size boot but access has a annoying step. 15% off new car is tempting.

If by annoying step you mean the the step down from the lip on the boot then there is a simple solution. A friend of mine has just bought a new Octavia estate and it has a false floor to give a flat entry, just like my Mk1.

Just taken a quick look at the Skoda site and it show an optional "Variable Boot Floor" at £155 and I would guess this gives you the flat floor entry - you need to check.

I like the look of the Seat Exeo  Don't know if the boots annoying though

Volvo.

Best, most reliable, least troublesome car (and with least maintenance require) that I ever had. Sad when it finally died, and really wishing I had another one right now. (Pesky VRS!!!!!!!)

Did what it said on the tin, and handled very nicely. I decided that the V50 was too small for me this time around (boot was a bit crap) and I just couldn't find a V70 in my price and economy range at the time. Was in a rush to get a car, and I'm sure paying for it now.

Thank goodness there's help around, eh! :D

just get another octavia - they were made up to 55 plate and will run to mega miles like you have shown

better the devil you know...

I have now test driven the passat and the octavia, and the octavia just nudges out the passat.

The passat has a nice feel to it once you get used to the electonic handbrake, and it's brakes are very sharp, but it's almost as big as the superb but feels much smaller inside and the boot whilst flat is smaller than my hatchback when the seats are up (passat 513/1641 litres) vs (octavia hatchback 528/1328) vs (octavia estate 605/1655)

The Octavia feels very sporty and responsive, and I felt at home straightaway. It is roomy inside but the brakes are not quite as sharp as the passat. I am undecided on the variable boot floor, but as long as I can remove and refit it, then I can maximise that boot space or have a flat loading area.

I have had a look at the seat too, but I think I am going to go for the Octavia.

Cheers for the comments!

I decided to test drive the Superb to make sure the Octavia was the car to go for, but once I had driven it was a very hard choice to make - better economy in the Octavia or nicer car to drive!

I decided to get the Superb. I just loved driving it and was reluctant to hand the demonstrator back to the dealer.

:) :) :) :)
