Featured Replies

Hi i took my car back to the garage where i bought it cos it had 3 warning lights on it had an orange steering one abs and traction control and esp now they have gave it back and the steering is still very heavy and all the others are out but i don`t think they have done anything should any of those lights come on when i turn the ignition on cos none of them are lighting up This is ma first skoda and am no very good with motors so any advice would be greatly received thanks.

Get someone with vcds to plug it in. You can test the instrument cluster and lights with it.

Press the button to turn off the TC. The light should come on.

Whats the bet they have removed the instrument cluster and put something over the LED light to stop it shining through....?!

cheers for the tips but it does look like they have just turned them off looks like a trip to trading standerds for me

That's very naughty if they have

I only say this as I have done it with the airbag light on my own car. But then I know I have removed all the airbags... I just decided to (lazily) just split the dash panel and cover the LED, rather than get a resistor kit to fool the actual wiring.... Probably should put a big health & safety warning on my dashboard for passengers. ;)

Jason, you'll need to sort it properly for the MOT test in 2012 otherwise your car will fail. Basically if a car was fitted with airbags from the factory then lights must follow the prescribed operation otherwise it will fail.

Did you buy this From a Skoda dealer or private. I would think suk would be interested if a dealer did this

You need to know if the ABS is working. You don't want to find out that it's not when some bonehead pulls out in front of you.

Find a quiet road or car park and give it a test.

Not aware of this being a (new) rule. Shall sort out the resistors if this turns out to be the case.

In theory, it's a failure now. If the tester notices the ABS sensors, he could fail you

ABS I can understand, but to my knowledge airbags have not been part of the MOT test, and I've not heard any plans to change this now.

You are quite right - I hadn't read your post properly :(

From the beginning of next year...

7.1.5. Airbag:

(a) Airbags obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.

(B) Airbag obviously non-operative.

No not a dealer got it from a bit in paisley westline motors

If it's the Teeves ESP fault the ABS will still work but not the anti skid. I wouldn't want to have to test that!

Might be worth taking it to a VAG dealer and paying to get them to examine in prior to going to Trading Standards. They'd be interested if you've been sold a 'defective' car with faults in braking and steering.

Yes they should come on when you turn the ignition on and go off when the engine is running unless you have turned ESP off. The steering one should always go off.

It will be from 01/01/12.

From the draft of the new testers manual:

Information. -

This inspection applies to airbags, seat belt pretensioners and seat belt load limiters fitted as original equipment.

The SRS malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may display a symbol similar to that shown below, or one depicting a person wearing a seat belt. Alternatively, the letters SRS or another symbol may be displayed.

Method of inspection. -

1. As far as practicable, check that all airbags fitted as original equipment are present and not obviously defective.

2. Turn on the ignition and check the presence and operation of any Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indictor lamp(s) (MIL).

Reason for rejection. -

1. An airbag obviously missing or defective.

Note: A passenger airbag that has been switched off is not a Reason for Rejection.

2. A Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp:

a. inoperative

b. indicating a system malfunction.

Combined with the fact that every MK 1 Fabia had a drivers airbag as standard, you'll need to get busy with the resistors.

It will be from 01/01/12.

From the draft of the new testers manual...

Hi Fordfan, do you have a link for the draft manual?

Thanks - a very interesting read.

Presumably, there is nothing to stop people going for a early MOT at the end of December to give themselves more time?
