Is the upgrade to the MP3 player worth it?

Featured Replies

I've got an Elegance 2.0 TDI on order and was toying with the idea up asking for the stereo upgrade (not the speakers). Does the face unit look the same on the MP3 enabled unit? I get the impression that you loose the changed in the boot and gain a 6 changer built into the head unit, much like the fords have. Is this correct?

Are there any restricitions on how you struture the CD e.g. directories etc? Also, I know some MP3 enabled stereos have usless interfaces e.g. navigating to tracks quickly etc is a nighmare. How does the skoda unit fair on this one? Just wish Skoda provided some prictures & documentation detailing the upgraded head unit :-(

Any help would be much appreciated. This all assumes that I still have time to amend my order

I have done precisely what you are proposing. I added it to my order after my first car was damaged in transit. From what I have read on some german forums it is worth it. The stereo looks identical to the standard "Stream" unit and has all the features like parking sensor display etc. The CD changer is as you said, integrated. Of course all 6 CDs may contain MP3s which gives the potential to have an enormous amount of music at your disposal. As far as I know, it will happily read CDRs and CDRW's with directories and softkeys allow skipping between directories. The downside is that it takes two keypresses to display ID3 tags and the default display cannot be set to display ID3 data. From what I have read, it handles bitrates right up to 320kbps at CBR, ABR or VBR.

Hope this helps :)

Sounds like a nice option to me. Thanks for the info. Will keep it in mind when my dad gets round to ordering one.

It is well worth the upgrade IMHO.

You can get ID3 info at one press, then further info by prerssing a second button. Well impressed with mine 84 LP's online at present :D

I currently use my organiser with a CF microdrive & fm transmitter but fancy the advantage of controlling things from the steering wheel e.g. change tracks etc (have already asked for multi-f s/w) rather than faffing with organiser. Could spend the same money on a nice portable MP3 player and still use the fm transmitter, but I like the thought of getting rid of all power leads etc.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Might be time to do my puppy dog routine with the wife :P Already astounded that she agreed to the original purchase as it is... :). Whats a couple of hunder on top of 20K ??

Obviously my German isn't as hot as I thought!

Your german might be spot on... The Info button doesn't bring up ID3 information, only the filename and foldername. ID3 information is a further button press on the other side of the unit while the info screen is displayed! I find the only problem with the mp3 player is the display. in normal display it shows for eg CD2 Folder 26 Track 19. So you can't navigate to a particular album if your folders are the albums. You have to skip folder, wait for track to play, press info button, and repeat until you find the right folder.

In other words it's useless while driving. I leave mine in mix mode all the time. The only other annoying feature is the speed it takes to read the file. This includes after returning to mp3 play mode after a traffic announcement, there's a few seconds 'Wait' while it re-reads the file... something it shouldn't need to do

That is pretty irritating, at least there should be a way to see the names of the folders in order to select an album; even the cheapest portable MP3 players have this feature! Almost makes me wonder if its worth the money.
