Can Xenons point the other way for driving abroad?

Featured Replies

Hi

Tried to search for this so apologies if the answer is on here somewhere!

We collect my girlfriends Yeti in a couple of weeks and will be taking it to France a couple of weeks later. The car has Xenons and having had a couple of cars with Xenons I know you shouldn't use the beam deflector stickers.

My Mini and my old BMW have a switch in the back of the headlamp unit that can be used to send the beam the other way and i'm wondering if the Yeti has something similar?

Thanks in advance!!

No it doesnt but it does have a 'tourist' mode thats selectable within the maxidot to enable use in other countries. It basically flatens the beam off. Ive found the lights to be less effective overall in this mode when driving abroad but it gets the job done.

The cornering function also gets switched off when in "tourist" mode.

It's very effective. I drove across Holland/Belgium/France back in March (when it was dark early, and therefore lights on a lot of the time). No angry flashes from oncoming traffic.

ok, so where in the maxidit would i find this function or is it only on higher spec vehicles?

From p56 of the manual:

Tourist light*

Xenon headlight

This mode makes it possible to drive in countries with opposing traffic system, driving on the left/right, without dazzling the oncoming vehicles. When the mode “tourist light†is active, the side to side swivel of the headlights is deactivated.

The mode “tourist light†is activated / deactivated via the information display* in the menu:

Some Audis and Volkswagens now use the GPS in the Satnav to do this automatically. I don't know if this applies to the Yeti with Satnav... :)

I'm getting a little worried by all these cars that are cleverer than me. Then again, it's not a new phenomenon, I think it started with the Austin Maxi :giggle:

The Austin Maxi was a winner. Brilliant advanced design as were all the ADO family only let down by patchy build quality due to industrial relations and a lack of investment... :)

How weird....I just mentioned the same car in another post. Brilliant design, ahead of it's time, just very badly implemented......

Agreed it is possible, but the question was have Skoda introduced it, and for that the answer correctly is NO.

"Looby" is partly correct, Audi are indeed working with NAVTEQ to incorporate GPS information into AFS installations. "Looby" merely wondered if Skoda used such a system, who knows, maybe Skoda will incorporate the next generation of AFS technology when it comes into production and finally filters down from the parent group. Thanks, the GPS Adaptive Lighting is already standard fit on the Audi A8, but you are right that it will take some time before it migrates down to the lower echelons in the VAG Group Vehicles... :)
