Quicker on part throttle

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Firstly, after feeling the car was lacking in overall power, I have replaced a selection of the problematic vac/breather pipes. I found one or two that had splits in them, and the car now drives much better than it did. One thing I have noticed though, is that it seems to accelerate much quicker most of the time when using part throttle, and going to WOT throttle feels like the car is choking, or strangling itself.

I had the 17705 code, and MAF fault code prior to replacing the hoses, which i've had cleared and as far as I am aware it hasn't come back. Unplugging the MAF doesn't seem to make a difference to the way it drives.

Any ideas?

The 'dump' from the recirc valve is hardly noticeable at high revs, but I guess this is normal as it won't be producing boost so high up the rev range?

Excuse my rubbish explanation, I've never been a turbo man before lol.

ideally need to change the parts rather than just clearing them ... though id clean the tb as well

I have replaced parts as per my original post; I haven't just cleared codes from the ecu.

I was told the MAF fault code could be caused by an air leak, so to check hoses first. I did that and replaced some that I found to have holes in them. Having then disconnected the MAF with no real change in performance, and having tried my mates MAF with yet again no difference, I can only assume it is ok. The car feels a bit flat at full throttle, but backing off to half throttle has much more oomph to it.

TB was cleaned about 4 weeks ago and solved idle issue and hesitation when coming on boost.

I find my vrs responds better sometimes if you dont just stick the pedal into the floor but press it down as revs climb if that makes sense, i do find you have to drive the vrs more to get most out of it unlike alot of volvos i work on and drive at work that seem to have power from idle

sounds ropey, maybe the extra throttle is flooding the engine? Or if there is a boost leak somewhere it's getting too much unmetered are in the system?

Mine is noticeably more responsive on full throttle compare to part.

Hmm, that's what I thought Mike. I shall have a look at all the other hoses, and to be honest probably rip out a load of the crap under the inlet. I’ve just fitted a compbrake DV, which appears to have gotten rid of the stutter when partially removing your foot from the throttle when on boost. The plan is to have the car remapped eventually, but I want to make sure the engine is running as it should first.

I’m just getting used to this turbo business, and I’m just getting used to driving the car… Having come from a Teg Type R, which means planting your foot and then accelerating like a bat out of hell lol; it’s a little bit different!

I’d be interested in going in another standard vRS, and comparing that, or somebody off the forum in the Leicester area coming in mine to see what they think. I’ve not been in many, and of late only driven mine and my mates, which I’m sure has been remapped, as it’s a bit of an animal!

Any other suggestions welcome of course!

Thanks for the input.

As your in Leicester book it into R-tech and get Nik to give it a once over. I live in Oxford but wouldn't go anywhere else for tuning.

I reckon I will take your advice to be honest. I've heard good reports and notice you have one of their remaps. I intend to go with a stage one map eventually, once this issue is sorted.

Thanks alot

Iirc this can be caused be leaking injectors as like you say it chokes the engine at higher revs might be something worth checking

I seen to have exactly the same problem as yourself :'( , I have the car for bout a year and a half and it never used to be like this so it is definitely a problem. I have also tried another MAF with no difference. It is almost like the clutch is slipping when you plant the foot to the floor as the car makes more noise but does not take off as it should. However the revs increase steadily and boost reading stays normal even though it clearly is not making use of it. Hmm what to try next ????? will deffo let u know if I get any result.

That's interesting, I shall check them. I'm going to give the car a once over to try and cure the issue. Will obviously keep you informed should I manage to fix it!

Sam

If it is a fuelling "bogging down" issue, the simplest thing to check first is that you are getting sufficient airflow. Can't increase one without the other. ;)

So many possibilities though with this engine :(

Was talking to a friend of mine and he reckons a possible cause could be the waste gate on the turbo, getting stuck open( or closed).

I have heard before that this is actually on the turbo and can be damaged on removal meaning new turbo $$$$

Any info on this before I decide to take a look would be greatly appreciated.

Right, today I hooked a boost gauge up to the car, to see if that could give indication to any leaks and boost levels. It seems to boost at around 9-10 PSI, which I presume is standard? We did also try it on my mates vRS, which we thought was standard a while back, however, spiking at around 21 PSI and holding around 17-18 PSI it seems obvious that its been remapped.

I am now assuming a sensor is causing the flat spot or something. My erratic idle has returned to a certain extent as well, as has the hesitation just before coming on boost. I got rid of this the first time by cleaning the throttle body, but now it appears to have come back slightly. What would a dodgy CTS do?

Did you ever solve this? My car is doing the same. Quicker with slight throttle and very flat on WOT.
