2.5 superb major head ache

Recommended Posts

hi all this is a real head buster. but here goes. i went over a speed bump a bit to fast. oops then the car died and will not start.

it hasent started since and thats been over a week.

i have had it put on a snap on fault reader and this is the fault codes

013176

542,

550

01318

01441

0532

every one i ask says its the injection pump, but it should not go because of going over a speed bump.

also there is no fuel coming up from the fuel pump in the fuel tank.

all the faults relate from the fuel system thats what makes me think its not the injection pump.

has anyone else had this problem from going over a speed bump.

hope someone can help.

its a 02 reg superb 2.5 diesel.

The only code that Ross-Tech list is the 01318, it is worth noting however their comment at the bottom (Special Notes When found on 2.5l V6 TDI, contact Ross-Tech for Assistance) however this will mean you would need the car scanned again by someone with a licensed VCDS interface, as the first thing they will ask for is a copy of the full scan.

01318 - Control Module for Injection Pump (J399)

01318 - Control Module for Injection Pump (J399): No Communications

Possible Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON

Possible Causes

  • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Injection Pump (J399) faulty
  • Injection Pump (J399) faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Injection Pump (J399)
  • Check Communication to Injection Pump (J399)
    • See Measuring Value Block (MVB) 018

    [*] Check/Replace Injection Pump (J399)

Special Notes

  • When found on 2.5l V6 TDI, has a Compression Test been performed? This code may be stored in Combination with a Compression Test even though the Communication is OK. Under these Circumstances this Fault Code should be cleared.

01318 - Control Module for Injection Pump (J399): No Elaboration Available

Possible Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON

Possible Causes

  • Control Module Software Issue

Inside the VP44 pump there's a really flaky piece of flexi pc which joins two parts of the electronics assembly. A decent speed hump might just dislodge it.

Take it to a decent independent diesel specialist - they know all about VP44s.

rotodiesel.

also there is no fuel being sent up from the fuel tank. i put a new fuel pump relay from the dealer but still no fuel being pumped up. i checked fuse 28 for the fuel pump its ok but when ignition switched on there is no power going through it not even for a second.

at first i thought it might be an emergency fuel cut of when cars are involved in a bump, but the superb doesn't have one.

Pretty sure that the V6 doesn't have a lift pump in the tank, just bigger outlets and tubes. The fuel is sucked through the filter by the fuel pump. Lift the engine cover and just unclip the cam belt covers at the top, pull them back and have a look for anything obvious. The toothed drive belt for the fuel pump is driven from a daughter sprocket on the nearside cam, which in turn is driven by the cam belt. The fuel pump sits at the front and at the top of the engine between the V and is dead easy to spot.

It may be something that's gone in the pump as suggested, but a quick scout round looking for anything obvious (electrical connectors) would be well worth doing?

The 2.5 does have a fuel delivery unit in the tank. If you remove the boot floor should should hear it, but you must turn the key to start for a second. Just turning the ignition on is not enough.

As you already know, there is a fuel pump relay in position 10 and this is fed from fuse F28. The fuel pump is controlled by the ECU.

If the fuel pump is running OK, then check the fuel cooler. It is easy to squash/bend it so it cuts off the fuel. These were not fitted to all 2.5s
