Help wanted: anyone with old memory cards lying around?

Featured Replies

I want to rejuvenate my old Dell laptop - 256 MB RAM is really on the low side even when running Linux :p

What I need is two SO-DIMM 512 MB DDR PC2100 266MHZ 2.5CL Non-ECC Non-buffered

No problem finding those on the market, but:

For some reason (Bangalore hitech design) my machine cannot handle chips larger than 32 MB!!! And all the cards I can find on the market use 64 MB chips.

If some of you pc experts here are of the sort that never throws functioning parts away you may have one or two in a drawer? You can expect a reasonable price :) so please send me a PM.

But remember - there must be 16 chips on a 512 MB card, if 8 it's of no use.

A 256 MB card (same specs, 8 chips) is an alternative - 512 MB RAM and Linux is not too bad. The real bottleneck is the slow HDD, hopefully I can replace it with a considerably faster SSD later on.

And please don't tell me it's a that the project is a waste of time and money, I already know that :) Just as I know that when memory and disk drive is upgraded the graphics card will break down

Am clearing out the shed this weekend - will have a look for you and let you know - if they are no good to me, free to good home.

Wardy may have some - Send him a PM...:)

I suspect most, if not all SSDs have a SATA interface rather than ATA, so you might struggle there - I am assuming your laptop is a few years old. Instead try looking for a 7200rpm ata disk.

I've actually been able to lay my hands on a second hand, hardly used, 32GB IDE/ATA SSD, r/w speed 56/23 MB/s :) Remains to see whether the motherboard can handle it...

@ robshaw: good tip, will PM

@ HotRod: Much appreciated, awaiting outcome

Hmm will be up in the attic on Sunday will have a dig around.

I think I've only got old desktop memory.
