Does anyone know - is the 1.4 noisier than the 1.9. Thinking of buying a Fabia TDi and drove a 1.4TDi Ambiente today and it seemed noisey.

They are both around the same volume of noise I'd say. The 1.4 sounds a bit like a sewing machine though

Yes!!! That's the sound! I couldn't put my finger on it at first but yes it's a Singer! Anyhows - I've put a deposit on an 05 1.9 TDi today gulp! Hope it's gonna be ok. It's got FDSH so should be - given my good experiences with Skoda in the past.

The 1.9TDi is a very good engine, mines approaching 143k miles and its still on original clutch and turbo (also remapped at 140k miles)

I've got a 1.9TDi (non-vRS), parents had a Mk2 08-plate 1.4TDi on about 15k as a courtesy car ... the 1.4TDi was noticeably noisier ... dunno if that's any help..?

++ EDIT : Just seen you've bought a 1.9 - good choice! Found the 1.4 a bit anaemic and lacking low-down torque ...

The 1.4 TDi gets quieter at motorway speeds and has a V6ish sort of note when you rev it

Feels like it has more than 75BHP too.

Thanks for all the posts folks. I feel a lot better, especially as I was considering buying a Renault :S
