Home after 1st long trip

Featured Replies

I've just got home after a super trip to the Isle of Mull. We have been going there annually for the past 25 years or so and the Yeti made this one of the best trips ever. Last year was in my Octavia L&K 1.8TSI DSG estate so there was a very interesting comparison. I missed the DSG very much on the single track passing place roads (on which we travelled 173 miles) and perhaps the Octavia L&K felt very luxurious and Rolls Royce like with it's near silent engine. Not that my Yeti diesel (170) was particularly noisy and the car was certainly more than comfortable. We loved the additional seating height (quite noticable with familiar scenery)and the roads in many places have severely rutted and pot holed surfaces which we took cautiously but the Yeti made no complaints at all if we hit any and we felt very secure on poor surfaces. We did no real off roading but could take to the verges with great confidence if a passing place was misjudged. It was an ideal vehicle for the whole trip. I was keen to see how the fuel consumption went so I took careful records and brimmed the tank whenever. The following may be fo interest :-

Mileage on clock at beginning of journey - 448 - so quite a new - perhaps stiff motor.

Total mileage travelled on journey- 877

Overall measured mpg 44.80 (maxidot said 48.6)

Average speed over the 23 hours 52 minutes driving was 37mph (lowish (?) with the 173 mile single track road element)

The journey from Carlisle to Oban via Glencoe was 273 miles comprising 120 miles MW/dual carriageway)and the rest fairly fast running A roads. I travelled mostly at satnav 70mph (indicated 74mph) - cruise control - on the dual and either 60mph or with the traffic flow on A roads and got 47.95mpg (measured) on this stretch.

On the 173 miles Mull single track roads - some taken at low sightseeing speeds but sometimes quite fast (This morning I did the 35 miles from Fionnphort to Craignure in 47 minutes - which is fast on a single track road with blind bends and summits etc.) - and for which I got a measured 38.73mpg

On the return 207 mile journey from Oban to Carlisle direct (via Inverary) we had a very good run travelling most of the time at maximum legal speeds though on the duals I went at an indicated 70mph which would be about 67mph satnav. For that journey we achieved 46.52mpg (measured)

I think the above figures for a new car are very good an it will be interesting to see what happens after 20,000 miles or so if things loosen up.

I only saw 1 Yeti in the whole two week period - on our way out of Oban this morning.

While parked at Fionnphort I saw many people round the car having a close inspection.

My most noticable observation was an unexpected lack of roll on corners. I expected more but found it handled much better than the Octavia and on taking a rally driver relation rather fast round some twisting hairpins near Dervaig, he made unsolicited comment on the lack of roll and the excellent road holding. This is perhaps my biggest and best surprise - the way it can be driven so swiftly on narrow twisting roads.

Apologies in advance if I don't acknowledge any comments on this topic over the next three days or so as I'm away to London (train) for a day or so.

I agree about the handling and lack of excessive roll. I was prepared to accept rather less/more respectively. The longer I've lived with the Yeti the more I realise it's pretty 'hot hatch' like on the twisty bits; you can really go for it with considerable confidence.

Sounds like you had a great trip and you are well chuffed with your purchase.

Another excellent report and bet you spotted all sorts of things not seen from the lower level of your Octavia apart from only one Yeti but how many sea eagles?

Can`t wait for mine but going to have to!

For the life of me I do not get why Škoda does not make a 170 DSG Yeti.... It will be the perfect Yeti for sure.

Sounds a lovely trip! Good review! Enjoy the car.

Saw one sea eagle nest with parents and chicks. Lots of Eagles. Mull is an incredible place to be for anyone interested in wildlife.
