Hooray. Clutch noise!

Featured Replies

After a long drive yesterday, I was getting some funny noise from the clutch this morning whilst idle and stationary (still not slipping though!).

Best I can describe it is a kind of whirring with a slight grating to it. It was only there as I was releasing the clutch pedal. Clutch pedal fully down = no noise. Clutch pedal fully up = no noise. Clutch pedal traveling = noise.

Didn't notice anything whilst I was actually driving. Had this noise appear a few times in the past, but it disappeared of it's own accord. Would like to know what the cause might be? DMF?

edit - Actually, release bearing might make more sense?

Pretty sure it's the release bearing mate. Box out job anyway, so I would drop a new OEM clutch in there at the same time, and check the DMF for excess slop from side to side. You can still get the complete kit for about £400 at some factors (LUK or Sachs). Or release bearing only at £40.

I'd agree. Well, except that I'd think about fitting a SMF clutch if the DMF needs replacing.

Thanks to both :)

I'm looking at an uprated clutch with OE DMF. I may as well if it needs replacing. For the DMF either LUK or Sachs DMF are fine I take it, neither is really any better than the other?

I don't think I could put up with the SMF chatter, and I have heard it can wreak havoc with the gearbox?

LUK and Sachs both fine

Mines the same. Has been for a year or so. Going to fit a new one when my gearbox is replaced.

Moggytech - would you know how much a dealer would charge to do a gearbox swap?

Stephen.

If you are supplying the box, about 2 hours work, so £160 roughly. If they are supplying a new box, roughly £1800

Really! I was expecting around £600 to swap gearboxes. I'm buying jasons old box from the mongrel on saturday.

Sod paying that on a £4k car lol.

Thanks, Stephen

(Sorry for the thread hijacking)

No worries Steve :-) I'm gonna ask my local dealer how much they would charge for a clutch overhaul if I supply the parts tomorrow... gonna ask about cruise control fit too I think.

Money = gone!
