Hi alanbathurst

Congratulations on your choice of car :)

The MDI socket sitting in the armrest is a universal MDI socket.

At your Skoda dealer, you can buy an USB or Iphone cable to connect to that socket.

Why not just use an SD card?

MDI is far more versatile and using an external laptop type HDD you can put 1TB of music in your car should you wish which far exceeds the capacity of an SD card. I would need about 600GB of disk storage to put all my music in the car.

To the OP, buy the MDI to USB cable from ebay as it should work out cheaper than the dealer but keep an eye on sellers postage fees as it could push the price higher than the dealer.

Thanks for the advice

Just got a MDI USB cable from FleaBay for nine pounds.

Go on then I'll bite, what better functionality does something using the MDI give you over the SD card?

I am 'only' using an 8GB micro SD card - in an adapter (as I already had it) yet there is still some space left, I have yet to store anything on the HDD.

You may well need 600GB of storage to hold your entire collection of music - but it would be impossible to listen to it all in the lifetime you drive the car!

This is a genuine request however, because IF by using the MDI I can get better functionality that the SD car then I might try it, I can't see what I would gain though

I do a lot of driving, and listen to a lot of music. Yesterday I drove for from 10am to 6pm with just a 1hr worth of stops on the way and like to have a variety of different music to suite my mood and traffic situation at the time. 600GB may sound a lot, but when its all ripped at a high bitrate to give the best quality it really is not a lot of music. I soon filled the internal HDD, and I got fed up of it being wiped by firmware updates and having to reload it all the time so looked for alternatives.

With high bitrates the SD card can be a bit fussy as they don't all have the required sustained read rate resulting in weird audio effects like jumping whole sections of music which does not happen on the internal HDD or MDI. Functionality wise its the same I guess, just that an SD card (even 16GB) is not large enough for my needs.

I asked the questiom in another thread and got no answer, what is the seek and search time like using an external HDD? is it better or worse than with an SD card? Thanks.
