Gearchange problem

Featured Replies

Hi all, I am wondering if anyone can help me with a gear selection problem on my MK1 Octavia. The problem has been getting worse over the last few months. Basically intermittantly you cannot get it into 2nd gear. I have done the gearbox adjustment as described in the Dieselgeek online clip and a friend was going to change the gearbox oil later this week.

We however looked at this tonight and the way the gear linkage changes gear. We can see that its not happy about either 2nd or 4th gear. My friend has the same gearbox in his w reg golf and when you put pressure on the counterweight arm it appears to be 'sprung'. On mine its very loose-i.e you have to pull it up and down.

Does anyone have any answers to this please as I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Quick update. Took the car to another garage and it turned out that the gear selector needed replacing. The bearings and the spring had gone. The new modified part has made a world of difference.Part cost was £166+VAT Also had gearbox oil changed.

Good result, shame about the cost though :'(
