turbo noise and green panel air filter questions ?

Featured Replies

hi 2 questions ????

1= should you hear the turbo whistle on vrs after 2000 revs or could it be air leak drivers side as when i had it 2 moths ago cant remember hearing it but have had it remapped since also just had new intercooler fitted

2= fitted a green performance pannel air filter and made the car worse could hear air going through the filter louder but car wasnt as responsive

when put foot down .. could this be as its a ex police car that its been tuned with the standard filter and when the standard was put back in seems a lot better

or anyone local with a vrs could have a listen for me

I can hear my turbo quite well, only some of the time though, when I can't hear the turbo the car feels alot slower.

can hear it every time over 2000 revs

whistle even if the windows are up

couldnt hear it before i got it remapped thats why i thought air leak somewhere

I can hear the turbo really loud. Starts from around 1800 RPM.

I can hear mine loud and clear. My mate with a TT (bam engine) is rather jealous of it because his doesnt even make a wastegate sound either. Bloody boring car.

Difficult to say, could be a number of things, but the fact you say is worse with the green panel filter could indeed point to a air leak, as if the panel filter is sucking in more air it will cause a more exagerated leak.

I can't hear mine, have an induction pipe and i can hear the boost build up and the dump valve but defo no whistle anywhere in the rev range. Always thought whistling was due to either leaks or something wrong with the turbo except in older cars and diesels. Every 1.8T i've been in has been quiet without whistling

i cant remember hearing it before the remap

it is more like a whistle than a spinning sound

any ideas on the green air filter i thought these were meant to make it more responsice not less

could it have been tuned by the police on the standard filter

so changing it made it less responsive

OK, sounds like you have a leak to me mate,

you say youve had a new cooler on? that is on the drivers side and if the whistle is that side Id say its that.

with the std air box and std paper filter on std map you wont hear much

pannel filter in std box and remap you should hear a sucking type noise from behind the glove box then on lift of you should hear a sneez. same with a CAI only louder

there should be no whistles or air sounds from the drivers side as far as I am aware mate, Id have a look to make sure they have fitted the pipes back on right and they are tight and not damaged.

When you put the filter in it lets the turbo suck in more air so will prob make the leak worse hence the less responce

been out today and can hear the turbo spinning in the background

the whistle im getting is more like a childs whistle if you blow slightly

have booked it back into the place where i had the intercooler done on monday

as for the green air filter looks like its gona spend its life in the boot haha

Mine's mapped and has a Neuspeed ram air induction kit on it and you can really hear the turbo. Makes a good whistle, I was told that they had differences in some KO3S equipped engines in that some had silencers on the turbo.

I know mine makes more noise because of the induction kit and the map but a mates thats completely standard still is vocal in the turbo department. I wouldn't worry unless it definitely feels slow.

Plus I had a Pipercross green air filter before my Neuspeed and that worked well too, just not as much raughty noise as with the Ram Air kit.

My cars completely standard and I love the sound of it, I can clearly hear my turbo sucking in or spooling up, it's sounds like its coming from the passenger footwell, and iv been in golf gti's and heard nothing, wHen I fitted the itg drop in filter the noise got slightly louder and added a very little dump on letting off now, I love the noise of it tho

took it to the garage today who fitted the intercooler he took it for drive and said its normal you should hear a loud whistle ??????????

i know it didnt sound like it when i had the car and the whistle is now driving me mad

if i put foot slightly on pedal and builds up to around 50 in 2nd cant hear it

the moment i floor it the whistle is back

wish i knew as i have to pay em £35 to get it on the smoke machine again

should the black pipe by the intercooler be wet?

who else has got this whistle and who hasnt

its not a turbo spinning / spooling noise

more like a referee whislte been blown lightly

Ive got a £45 re circ valve off ebay, pipercross panel filter and its been mapped. I get a spooling noise, also a dump. Not overly loud tho but its perfect.

its not a spinning noise

can hear that a bit spinning spooling turbo noise

this is a high whistle

if foots on pedal lightly cant hear it only when foot to the floor

all that points more and more to a leak from the IC area.

NO the pipes are not ment to be wet. Is it oil? All the breathers go back into the intake system and build up over time in the IC and lower pipes, With having the IC changed and a pos leak you could find that the oil is being pushed out of the leak?

on partial throttle you wont hear it coz you dont get the high preasure like you do when you floor it as the system opens the waste gate to reduce the boost as its not needed on partial throttle.

With what you said I wouldnt be going back to that garage again.
