pitted and corroded brake discs after 18 mnts 15k

Featured Replies

HI,

I have a octavi vrs , bought it 12 mounts ago, with 7500 miles at 6 months old , now done 15k.

went in for service, they tell me the brake discs ( all 4! ) are pitted and corroded.

not covered by warranty , by neither skoda or dealer ( dm keith wakefield).

this is crazy , discs dont corrode after 18 months.

any one got any opinions ?.

You can thank your council for scoring on the disks (if thats what you mean by pitting) as the huge ammount for sand and grit used on the roads over the winter gets in between your disks and pads and gives them a good grinding.

As for corrosion, this should only be on the bits where the pads dont come into contact with the disks, and should be pretty minimal and if there is some it can be knocked of easily.

Whats do they look like to you ? Any chance of posting a pic up ?

I've had to replace the same brake discs on successive MOTs on my 35 year old Seat for the same reason with just a few hundred miles between!

As you aren't at the MOT stage yet, if the brakes work properly I would be inclined to ignore the suggestion that they need replacing.

They could clear up a bit with use, but obviously I haven't seen them and I'm not an expert.

I'm not sure of the legal implications and obviously you must do what you think best for safety's sake.

Perhaps get a second opinion from another garage/mechanic?

Yes they do - For one thing, they're made of plain cast iron, and all ferrous metals corrode if not treated or cleaned regularly.

You don't say but are you a "gentle" driver (one who rarely uses the brakes)?

First things first, take it out for a run and do a few emergency stops to give the surfaces a scrub, then see how they look.

I'm not one to suggest you throw caution to the wind, but up-selling unnecessary brake work seems to be fairly common as unknowledgable folk will rarely resist due to the safety implications.

thanks for all the replies !.

just got the car back , and checking the discs myself, it is very minimal just need a clean up , i would agree with chr1taylor , maybe they were trying to upsell.

on a better note, i also mentioned the 3rd gear "baulking" when pushing hard, they replaced the flywheel and gear box.

For comparison my TFSI is 4yr and on 47k and I'm still on the original discs and pads all round. They don't look that worn tbh.

Do you live near the sea? Salty air won't help.

I don't live by the sea and no other discs on any other vehicle i have owned in the last 30 years, park in the same place,

has suffered the same problem.

Car MOTd today and I got an advisory for 'slightly pitted discs'.

Being a cynic I'm slightly going to ignore this. I suspect just about every car will get something about pitted discs.

After all it's a quick job with a nice profit.

They seem to have got "hot" on brake discs on the MOT in the last years. I suppose it may have something to do with pad materials changing but all in all I think its generally a bit of a con.

Be a good excuse to splurge some cash on a big brake upgrade though . . . .
