MOT failed, need new spring coils.....

Featured Replies

Hi all, my car just failed its MOT, it has 2 broken rear spring coils. Called TPS and they want £75 for each of these coils, apparantly the 4x4 has special spring coils...?

Just wondered if anyone might have any input on this as £75 each seems like a heck of a lot for standard spring coils.

Well, the vRS springs are TPS or dealer only, and they're about the same price. Maybe the 4x4 are special springs?

Ahh so could well be the same for 4x4 springs then, which ofc means extra special high prices :0)

Apparantly ( so i have been told) the 4x4 ones are shorter and squatter/fatter than others which is why they are more expensive?? because of the 4wd system. Kinda just wanted to make sure i wasnt being stitched up tbh

the springs are 25mm taller and have a higher lbs to take extra weight.look on ebay.

If you're looking to replace with standard springs I've still got the original ones off my 4x4.

Aha! presume the ones form an estate will be the same as for a hatchback? or are they slightly different to account for more load carrying being an estate.

But sounds ace, just going to replace them with standard springs, so if they are the same would be excellent.

Estate ones have a different partnumber than the hatchback. They would fit but might be stiffer I guess??

I have a pair of TDI springs in my garage that were fitted to my sold VRS by the previous owner not realising that VRS springs are dealer only. They were on the car for less than 2000 miles. I was going to put them on ebay, but PM me if you're interested in them.

My 4X4 Estate needed both rear coil springs replacing in March 2010 last year when one was found to be broken. The TPS price then was £68.64 each inclusive of VAT at 17.5%.

OK thanks all for replies and offers of springs etc., it would appear the estate ones are indeed slightly different from the h/b ones, so i played it safe and got some from a VW dealer, luckily i got trade prices too, not a huge saving but better than nothing :0)

£54.81+vat

part no: 1J9511115G

if anyone ever comes looking again

You should notice a considerable improvement in handling when the new springs are fitted.

Hmm you rekon? it was the very bottom part of the spring that was broken, the bit that sits inside the 'cup' ? so you can't actually see it unless its on a ramp, would not have thought it would make a huge difference? Although.... i spose new springs will bit stiffer than 9 year old springs :smirk:
