Skoda Superb lives up to its name

Featured Replies

Well after just 5 months I am a true convert! My Greenline 1.9 contract-hire vehicle was delivered mid January this year and now 16k miles later I am still surprised just how good these vehicles are

My first Superb was a mk 1 (with the terrific 130bhp 1.9tdi engine that I know so well) Comfort which was hurriedly purchased as a stop-gap measure following the early demise of my Passat due to yet another driver not paying attention....

My Greenline is simply brilliant. It swallows the motorway effortlessly everyday on my commute and is so relaxing. I use the cruise permanently and usually see 70 to 75 mpg each trip - but this week saw a new record........ 80mpg after a relaxed 60 miles trip, cruising at indicated 70mph most of the journey. (The key to big mpg is partially in driving style by the way.... and you get there just as quickly though nobody seems to believe it when you tell them...)

Negative observations ??? Only v minor..... a couple of odd rattles from somewhere in the dash at first (which seem to have now vanished as the miles have gone up.... ??) In certain situations the 105bhp is a little bit meagre, but then who cares what the power output is when you are doing 70mph and 70 plus mpg most of the time.....

Am already thinking what the Greenline 2 1.6 tdi will be like in another 18 months time when the contract is renewed.......

Doubtful I will be going back to VW.....

My sister in law looked at my Elegance Estate (side on) and commented "nice beemer" - The sales guy at work was miffed when he found out that the seats and dash in the Audi A5 are all but the same as mine, apart from the fact that I have leather and £10K more in my bank account.

I won't be "going back" either B)

I had a Greenline II 1.6 Tdi Estate demonstrator for three days recently. I found it quieter and more economical than my existing 1.9Tdi Twindoor.

On the 45 mile motorway commute home I managed 74.5mpg with relative ease, travelling at or around 60mph.

The car had 3,000 miles on the clock and easily kept up with motorway traffic. A 140 CR would be nice, however, the economy and emissions are no match for the VW/Audi versions of the same engine which benefit from Stop Start etc.

I had that exact dilemma with Passat vs Superb. The best thing about the passat is the emissions. The best thing about the superb is everything else. I test drove both and picked up a superb.

Which Superb did you end up choosing?

Skoda Superb Estate 140PS CR Diesel, 6 speed manual, elegance trim with metallic paint. I bought an ex-demonstrator from my local Skoda Dealer. The stock elegance trim had all the toys I wanted (except for the spare wheel  )

The stock Passat SE would have cost an extra £3K, and that is without trying to bring the trim on the Passat up to elegance spec (Xenon headlights for the Passat are £1200 alone!)

In the end it was a trade off, a better spec'd car that I prefer to drive against a more expensive car that has better fuel economy. Even with my high mileage (25K/year) I went with the Superb that I would enjoy driving and spending a lot of time in.

Is it really the same seats as in the A5? Thats pretty funny :) Anyone that can confirm it? Have a 2012 CR140 manual myself, with beige leather.

Some interesting mpg figures there. Are they from the computer or refill checks? I don't want to rain on your parade but the fuel computers are notoriously optomistic.

Audi seats are all leather, Superb is partial leather.

Partial leather? Mine are all leather.

Partial real leather i think. Only the parts of the seats thats exposed to "abuse" is real leather. The rest is fake leather.
