suspension set up..?

Featured Replies

out of interest, has anone had any experience with these koni fsd shocks - http://cgi.ebay.co.u...T#ht_5145wt_905 these have adjustable damping.

ive always found konis to be very good on my previous cars, and im thinking about going with this setup along with some of these lowering springs - http://cgi.ebay.co.u...IT#ht_898wt_905

do you think it maybe an overkill? as coilovers are available for around the same price - http://cgi.ebay.co.u...IT#ht_727wt_905 these dont have adjustable damping.

bearing in mind i need to keep comfort a priority as the car is a taxi, yes i know i will have to probably sacrifice a little comfort but i definitely do NOT want a "crashy feel every bump in the road type setup".

im still undecided on weather to go for 18" or 19" wheels as this will have an effect on the ride quality. although i am swaying more towards 18"s.

any suggestions on setup

Neither.

Konis rust through and eventually crack, I had yellows on Octavia, lasted 70k and then one cracked, separated and spilled. Plus the Sports are too hard for town driving.

I have been running Bilstein Sports B6 monotubes for the last 4 years / 80000+ miles, and they are excellent. Comfort same as stock if slightly better on country roads, handling at any speed and in corners much better than stock. And they do not rust.

Aftermarket lowering springs kill comfort and sag quicker, and I include Eibach in this group too. Passat/Superb had "sport" suspension option when new and these came with 30mm shorter springs that still offered good comfort. They also sag quicker, though.

I have just put new springs on the car because the ones I had earlier (OEM sport springs) sagged after 4 years. During spring replacement, I checked the shocks and they are still moving as new. A short drive afterwards confirmed that the handling is restored. It is actually slightly sharper than when previous springs were new, because I have now put slightly stiffer springs 0JM/1000kg instead 0JL/970kg I had before.

18" wheels will take away a lot of comfort. I regularly drive 140mph+ (autobahn) on 16in wheels, and with good shocks, this is the best setup for comfort. If you need sharper handling, just pump up the tyres another 10%-15%.

Also, I would imagine in a taxi, you'd care about cost. 16in tyres are 30% cheaper than 18in tyres.
