Octavia vRS TFSI mild tuning

Featured Replies

Hi There

I bought an Octavia yesterday, and I am about to order parts from awesome, but before I do, I was wondering if there is anything I need/ought to replace before I get a remap?

I want a Milltek turbo-back resonated exhaust + carbonio intake, but is there anything else I should purchase, valves etc., to get the best possible setup for the engine without fitting a new turbo og injectors.

Another thing... Where can I find brushed aluminum/stainless inserts for the dash? The standard grey ones have some scratches and I was thinking about replacing them with some fancier looking ones or have them repainted.

Thanks

Anders

Depends how far you want to go? With the exhaust you could go for a stage 1 or stage 2 map. With the addition of an uprated high pressure fuel pump you could go stage 2+ (stage 3).

The Carbonio intakes aren't really regarded as a very good mod, you would be better off buying a full cold air intake.

In terms of what you "need" the only thing that regularly comes up with the TFSI is an upgrade to the diverter valve. The OE unit from those early TFSI cars does not always stand up to a boost increase for long. Forge do one (awesome should be able to advise) or go for the latest spec OE vw item.

Personally, I did the suspension first before looking at anything engine related but each to their own.

Can't agree more with this comment, a stage 1 remap alone can yield incredible increases in both power and torque, uprate the chassis first or at the same time as a remap or you will have an expensive ditch finder on your hands. :o

To echo martziniuk, the carbonio looks nice but does fek all in terms of power increase, also the only part of the exhaust that requires changing is the down pipe and cat, adding the cat back portion will earn 1-2hp if your lucky.

So in summary, invest in a set of uprated/lowered springs and dampers (or coilovers), then add an intake - EVOMS, ITG etc, a down pipe with sport cat or decat and bingo, an awesome motor that will stick to the road when the 260hp is called upon! :thumbup:B)

Slightly going away from original post, however I feel it's been answered very well. Does the TSI vrs require uprated springs and dampers? I have mine at stage 1 but didn't even consider the suspension.

Don't think the handling of the TSI is much different to the TFSI. So I'd guess the same rules would apply.

I'd always go with sorting out handling and brakes first, before you increase the horses!

There are plenty of folk on here who have tried most of the popular set ups and can advise on the differences.

Thanks. "Full cold air intake" would that be something like this from ITG: http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=24610&xSec=305 or do you have experience with another good/better alternative?

With regards to suspension and etc., I know this might be the other way around for some people, but I guess I am just another breed :o)

As Pagey mentions above, the EVOMS CAI comes highly recommended: http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/ViewProduct.asp?Now=6%2F28%2F2011+4%3A49%3A32+AM&ProductID={8CDEE7A3-3B09-44FD-88D7-731C5B329E41}&OrgID={CA5E16BC-D877-4137-8237-7EB9084DD3D8}&ParentID={BA20F73F-0EEB-4939-B03E-E8BE0ED66C8B}&Curr={BA20F73F-0EEB-4939-B03E-E8BE0ED66C8B}

Yeah that sort of thing but that's for a Tsi, you need Tfsi like this http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=14101&xSec=305

Which is regarded as a good intake.

I run a Bsh Trueseal which I find to be very good but a bit too noisy, it is a lot cheaper than other intakes on the market and the Yanks love em. Another good popular intake is the Forge Twintake. I haven't upgraded my suspension or brakes either, I don't track the car and find the standard suspension firm enough, my brakes also seem damn good in standard form with upgraded discs.

Hi Guys

I think I just need to be pointed in the right direction, and I found this comparison between the Forge and the Carbonio: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,9988.0.html

I don't know whether I will see this difference, but if he gets 15hp by just swapping them, I think there might be something to it :wonder:

Does anybody know the difference in noise level between the Forge/BSH/Evoms? If they are equal in terms of power, I might choose depending on noise...

I would imagine the twintake to be the quietest as it has an enclosed filter, the other two are open.

I've emailled Forge and they said although the twintake fits the mk5 golfs and Audi A3s, they wont fit the Octavia? And they dont have a product that will??? :dull:

Agreed, the EVOMS is loud......! :o But the BSH is apparently louder.

The Tfsi engine in the MKV Gti is the same as the MKII vRS, I got my EVOMS 2nd hand from a Gti owner.....so thats one product that will fit. I can't see any reason why the twintake wouldn't fit, theres more room in a vRS engine bay! :wonder:

EDIT: Comparing engine bays, I think the issue on the Octy is the depth of the headlamps and the way the wings wrap around.

I wonder if Forge have any plans to make one for the vRS. If anyone is interested it might be worth a mention in the Forge sponsors section, they're are always knocking bits up for people.

I cant see there being too much more work needed to make an application for the vrs. I mean they've got it for the Audi and golf and TT already! The guy I emailed was nice enough but I got quite a distinct impression that there isn't one that would fit a vrs and that's that. There wasn't a, "we're developing a kit" or anything. I guess there's more people in golfs, A3s and TTs than there are skodas.

Personally, I'll prob go EVOMs or ITG, there's a few on the market and they should fit, I'll just check before I buy I guess.

Nope - I went straight from BSH to EVOMS without changing anything and the EVOMS is considerably louder. In a good way, if you like that kind of thing like I do (though nothing like the Forge blow off valve, which sounds ridiculous).

With hindsight now, the BSH is a truly awful product - I'm amazed it's so popular in the US. I bought mine on the back of many favourable [uS based] forum posts and was initially pleased, but the infernal honking goose noise made me swap to the EVOMS, and it had gone rusty in the short time it was on the car.

Handling mods wise, it depends what you want from the car. Personally, I want to be able to accelerate rapidly in a straight line as and when the mood suits me, hence why I've done no handling upgrades whatsoever. If you're a track day fan or like driving enthusiastically around corners etc. then handling/brake mods should be higher up your list.

Didn't Sy buy a second hand Twintercooler (are we talking about the same thing here) from one of the SEAT guys only to find it wouldn't fit?

Well I ain't driven mine yet, but I knew what I wanted from the car before it goes on the road which will be a quick car that goes around bends well (not that the vrs is poor to start with really) and stops excellently and still comfortable to cruise the motorways. With that in mind so far I have neuspeed front and rear arb's and eibach pro springs (prob change to coilovers in the future) and in the middle of changing to s3 front wishbone bushes, Audi s3 brakes and a bsh race cold intake kit. Once i have it on the road it will be downpipe and racing cat/decat and stage 2 map. I have the tsi lump so know the fuelling system can take a bit more so will be leaving that. It seems most fsi owners upgrade the fuel pump once you get to stage 2 + as the last thing you want is an engine running lean.

Just my ten pence but research what the golf and leon boys are doing aswell as the good folk on here as ain't many people that can leave a VAG car alone :)

Good luck and enjoy whichever route u go down

Hi again

So I did some "picture investigation" into the subject and have a question...

Regarding the ITG, where does it draw cold air from? Looks like the EVOMS and the BSH draw cold air from the original supply in the front of the car.

My concern is that it might be a good quality, but if it just resides in the engine compartment, it might draw pre-heated air?

What are your 50 cents on that?

Anders

We are talking about a Twintake not the Twintercooler.......do keep up! :p :giggle:
