security after lost yeti key

Featured Replies

Lost transponder key in coat for recent Yeti and cannot be sure if any info also in coat re name and/or address. Can a lost key be untagged from the car (or car re-programme only to accept keys in hand) so that the lost key could not be used to start car even if mechanical entry to car would still be possible? Changing locks is one option, but any ideas of cost for lock change or just untagging lost key?

I can't answer most of your questions here i'm afraid, however maybe worth checking if you have and insurance policies that cover this. My brother lost his alarm key fob, but his credit card insurance covered against lost keys (!) and with 48 hours he'd had the whole system replaced free of charge

Many home insurance policies will cover this under contents too, check with your provider.

Yes you can just get the car re-coded for the immobiliser. I had it done on my Polo a few years ago, i had a new key after a certain dealer managed to damage the blade but kept the key. This key no longer worked after i had the new one as they had re-coded the immboliser for the new and spare key.

Thanks to all for fast replies (I think my first reply did not load). It is at times like these that you learn a lot about insurance policies. Home insurer (Halifax) pointed to exclusion clause for "Automobiles, parts & accessories", but said they would cover house key and house lock replacements above "excess" (= no point in bothering). Car insurer (Admiral) said it was up to me to decide whther to replace locks, but I wouldn't be covered if he car was stolen with lost key. They offered £100 towards replacement locks without affecting no claims.

I was on phone to SKODA UK Customer Services to ask whether lost key could be de-tagged and they said it couldn't without replacing locks, where tagging the keys for new locks to the car would result in ALL old keys being untagged. This was after explaining my exact question a couple of times. I asked them to be very precise with reply and they confirmed, after double-checking. I have since found that for the my key vintage (recent) that it is possible to purchase a new key for existing locks and when that key is being tagged to the car, all other keys to be tagged must be present, such that the lost key would become untagged. Maybe others cvan concur with this..?

PS somehow I became associated with Octavia Forum rather than Yeti, but thanks for helpful replies

This is basically what i did, i went to another dealer and took the now spare key in and said it didn't work, they then said that all keys need to be together when coding.

A Dealer can does this, SUK obviously don't understand what you mean. The key will obviously still work in the lock but they won't be able to start it.

On all my car insurance policies I have had a no impact to no claims full locks replacement and keys for lost ones doesn't affect no claims discount but still classed as a claim at renewal same as windscreen replacement that most people don't know they have to declare just because it doesn't blow their NCB. Might be worth a call to see if your car or home insurance can offer anything
