woosh noise, then ploom of black smoke

Featured Replies

Not long had my 04reg Fabia Vrs (64k fsh etc)

Driving along earlier, probably 40mphish, not accelerating hard at all (5th gear), there was a loud pfft/woosh/bang noise, hard to explain; then a ploom of black from the exhaust.

Engine tick over is totally normal, but the engine sounds slightly deeper, when i nursed the car back to the skoda garage on the way home, it drives to 1500rpm then judders and chucks out a tonne of smoke, didnt go any higher than 3rd, but thats the gear it did it worst in.

Skoda bloke checked the pipe he thought it might be, but all seemed good, he then said it might be the pipe coming off the intercooler?

Anyone got any knowledge of this, or do you think it could be the turbo giving up on me?

Cheers!

Sounds most likely a boost pipe has popped off and yes it usually pops off on either one of the IC connections, probably the lower one so you will need to take your undertray off to get to it.

cheers, I just had a bit of a look around on here, and it does sound a lot like the boost pipe, I'll look into it tonight. Thanks

As above, definitely sounds like a boost pipe.

Also trying to accelerate from 40 in 5th will do your flywheel absolutely no good.

This is what it looks like when they go pop

I thought "popped boost pipe" just from the thread title. Check them all, working from the engine top down, because when mine did it, it was the upper pipe at the joint just in front of the timing belt cover, which is the easiest to get at.

They really are a nightmare those stock hoses, when I had my Ibiza they were popping off all the time! :(

Good man they are nice and cheap from the dealers! Check where the clips grip on the pipe too as they can become damaged and need replacement :)

Also if you do have a boost leak at the moment and still need to use the car don't drive too hard as the boost leak can cause over spooling which can cause the turbo to fail.

Cheers

Has anyone got the part numbers for the clips and the grips (sorry I'm being lazy), as I'd rather replace it all rather than it come off again. The car hisses a lot more, I'm guessing there is a bit of a leak still, but yeah I've been driving it off the turbo today and I'll try to do it untill I get new clips.

Cheers!

Pop goes the diesel!

Guess who :p
