hello all im a newbie here please help out..my car done 90k kms is having jerky starting while cranking also on idle there is a noise coming from the hood.i suspect its the flywheel. When is the flywheel to be changed?(How many kms)or Does the MFD alerts us to do the same?is DMF or SMF best for my car?

also when is the cambelt due for change?(how many kms)is there a alert for that too on MFD?i heard if its not changed in time and if its broken the engine has got to be rebuilt

i hear a turbo whistle sound at low revs only recently what could be the issue?

The cam belt is changed every 4 years or 80,000 miles (125,000km) - whichever comes first so your 90,000km 5yr old should have have a new cambelt around a year ago. MFD doesn't give a warning for this.

Thank u :) when is the flywheel due for change?which is best dmf or smf?any brands?

I'd go 4yr/60k miles on the cambelt and waterpump myself!

No warnings for any of this via on-board systems. Not a bad idea though

Whistling when coming on boost can sometimes indicate that the turbo is beginning to fail, and that there is increasing wear on the turbo internals.

Thank u all.I was confused between dmf and smf coz dmf came as OEM on my car.mine is dsg A/T.which one is better for smoother shifts?actually whts the difference btw the two?

Given the car for cambelt change right away, atleast i dont want to blow my engine? its very costly here 215 euros for cam belt including labour.is it necessary to change the water pump too? flywheel I guess I don't have to hurry even if the car broke down with a damaged flywheel I can tow it to the workshop and get it changed?

The turbo whistle is audible at low speeds mostly when we lift off foot from the accelerator.the dealer says it probably a turbo leak somewhere.the skoda service in India sucks bigtime.they r ruining such good car with below average skilled mechanics.

Hang on, your car is DSG? This changes everything. If this type of transmission fails you don't really have much option apart from having it repaired with OEM parts. Otherwise it won't operate properly.

Yeah it's dsg oki so dmf gosh 785 euros:(

What makes you think it's the flywheel anyway? DSG transmissions have been shown to generally be strong and reliable, especially as you're running it with the 1.9 PD105 which isn't exactly powerful. And you've only done the equivalent of 54,000 miles - which is nothing.

What else it could be?The dealer only said the flywheel has to be changed soon it's 80% damaged.does diagnostic computer thingie they have shows the life of it in percentage?moreover I get a shaky starting while cranking, damn the whole car shakes. There is a trrr intermittent sound from engine while idiling.also there is a sound at the beginning of rpm while we gas it in traffic this has started last week onwards.

I changed the cambelt.not much of a difference.dealer says no need to change waterpump now.

I cannot see how they can accurate give you a 'percentage wear' figure!

As the DSG box has electronic/ECU control over it, I would say that damage to the flywheel is much less like compared with a manual transmission. Doesn't mean it can't happen of course, but the mileage your car has covered doesn't seem to back this up.

Wardy the turbo hissing noise is in between 1000 to 2000 rpm. Could it be a leak somewhere?

Does TDI engine needs one minute idle after start and before stop?

If it sounds like escaping air to you then yes, a leak is possible. Do you have VCDS/VAG-COM? You could run some block measuring which might give you a better idea. If not, a visual check of all intercooler/turbo pipework and clips.

Any turbo engine I would advise idling like that yes, or probably more convenient is to drive it off-boost for the last few minutes of your journey. Just to allow oil to circulate.

DSG oil needs to be changed at 40k.

Hi jo

I believe, if it's flywheel disintegrating, noise should be most noticeable from rear of NSF wheel at ground level.independent mechanic pinpointed it straight away. It was'nt big noise though but as i was buying the car it was replaced by garage. Dmf fitted by skoda £1077. noise gone. Make sure use new bolts also. can't help on other bits.

Mileage is 112000m though!

If the problem was the flywheel then the engine wouldn't shake while it was cranking but when it took up the drive as you move off or change gear.

If you have an air leak somewhere (eg a split pipe) then that would cause the hissing/whistling and could be causing a weak fuel/air mixture that causes the engine to misfire badly especially during starting and cold running.

The reason for changing the water pump is that they are cheap to buy and they fail regularly. Large labour cost to replace though. It only added £35 to my last cambelt change.
