Coilovers, FSD's or maybe something else?

Featured Replies

I personally don't think ( from experience) that any coilovers are particularly suited for road use due to the hardness of them and the low quality materials used in pretty much all but the KW's

Skuddy you've posted similar opinions in the past I think.. I have to say just because the only coilovers you've had experience of were too hard does not necessarily mean that ALL coilovers are too hard! Have you tried KW street comfort for example?

Ditto the comment about quality- poor quality exists with fixed dampers and coilovers and you definitely get what you pay for with all suspension components irrespective of the format IMHO. "Don't buy cheap rubbish" is a comment you could apply to any mod.

Anybody running these or have heard any reviews, seem a bit cheap compared to others.

No experience of Apex stuff, sorry. There is not much info on that page but I'm guessing they are painted rather than galvanised? IMO worth spending a little extra to get this in case they corrode, rendering the height adjustability inoperable?

I've just been looking at the DPM site, seems Weitec GT coils have gone up in price since I bought mine, for my car they are now £619 where the equivalent KW V1 (also galvanised) is only £594. I'm a bit puzzled by that given that the Weitecs are made by KW and I thought were meant to be a brand positioned in a lower price bracket to the "flagship" KWs..?!

I recently researched a possible change for swmbo's car to an S4 - on a lot of sites I found the Vogtland brand very popular. No personal experience of these but they might be worth a look in the "sub-500-quid" bracket?

We have a discount off the KW V1 Basic at the moment which is why on some vehicles they actually work out cheaper then the Weitec's, great time to buy at the moment.

Comes down to this personal preference thing again :)

One issue is what you're expecting the upgrade to do, and behave. A customer expectation if you will. The second issue is ride comfort and compliance and this is chiefly governed by the roads you mostly drive on, their type and surface quality.

Hence my earlier post. Personally, coilovers were suitable for my first set of requirements, but I found that sort of setup did not work well in compliance terms, because of the awful nature of the roads I spend most of my time on.

Does this mean coilovers aren't suitable for others? No, course it doesn't. It might even be that others would term coilovers as acceptable on the same roads I use day and daily. Personal preference. It also could be that another type and setup of coilover would have been acceptable for me. Hard to say, but the options are then stacking up really, and you can't fit various different types to try them out - it's just not feasible.

This did mean I tried coilovers first, removed them, fitting a sports spring/damper setup (Eibachs and FSDs) and then sold the coilovers. That's not something others will want, or could afford to do. And I'd certainly avoid it myself if possible!

I had previous experience of this same combo on one of my Fabias, and once I heard they'd brought out a re-designed model, this was enough for me to follow the same route again.

If there's one top tip in all of this, it's try before you buy - if at all possible :)

Hope this helps!

I tried three different brands on two different cars including KWV2's, they were very good but with the carp roads in the NW were just to harsh, an opinion echoed regularly across many forums, especially for a daily driver....just my opinion though

BTW KW, FK,& Wietec and a couple of others all use Koni Dampers ( dont know about street comfort though)

opinions for FK Sport Edition Plus Coilover Suspension Kit?

If you're wanting a kit with damping adjustability and don't want to spend too much then they're excellent value for money.

Pretty certain kw don't use koni btw.

Eibach used to partner with kw doing their springs - kw making eibachs dampers. Think things may have changed though as it looks as if eibach may be using bilsteins instead now?

I have FK Highsport coilovers, and are very happy with the drive comfort. Even down at 90mm they are quite good, but they gets a bit bouncy on rough road at low speed when about 70-90mm down. :)
